Saddam's young grandkids break down in tears

December 14 2003 at 07:03PM

Amman - Grandchildren of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who sought haven in Jordan with their mothers in July, broke down in tears when they were told Sunday of his capture, parents of their schoolmates told AFP.

Raghad and Rana Saddam Hussein and their nine children were granted refuge in Jordan, where they live in a former palace of King Abdullah II's late father, King Hussein, on a hill in eastern Amman.

Their children attend two exclusive private schools in Jordan, where the families have kept a low profile since arriving in the kingdom from Syria.

"When news of Saddam's capture became known, school officials gathered the children in the principal's office at both schools and informed them of what had happened and the children broke down in tears," one parent said.

'The children broke down in tears' "The children were shielded from the rest of their schoolmates until their drivers came and took them home to be with their mothers," the parent, who declined to be named, added.

Meanwhile the regional correspondent of the Dubai-based Arab satellite television, Al-Arabiya, told AFP that one of Saddam's daughters was also stricken by reports of his capture.

Silawi said he spoke on the telephone from Dubai with Raghad. "She was crying and kept on repeating 'I wished I had never lived to this day'," he said.

Raghad and Rana suffered from their father's sadistic streak just like the rest of the Iraqi population, seeing their husbands and their families exterminated on his orders.

On August 8, 1995 the two women, their husbands, General Hussein Kamel Hassan al-Majid and his brother Colonel Saddam Kamel, along with about 30 members of the Majid family, spectacularly defected to Jordan.

'I wished I had never lived to this day' Two days later, from the safety of his refuge across the border, Hussein Kamel appealed in an AFP interview for the Iraqi people to rise up and overthrow his father-in-law's regime.

The Kamel brothers were killed in February 1996 on orders from Saddam who had lured them back home with a promise of an amnesty. - Sapa-AFP

According to a story on another thread, Saddam killed at least two of his other grandchildren. These misfits are lucky to be alive.

Since Saddam is looking at the death penalty, there doesn't seem to be a good way to get him to talk, unless we let some of his Iraqi victims play with some car batteries. I don't think we would do that.

Perhaps we could exert some leverage by scooping up his children and grandchildren. I am not suggesting that we torture or kill anyone--just make it clear to Saddam that if he doesn't cooperate, his family will be relocated from their world of riches to, perhaps, some Palestinian ghetto in Gaza. After all, their entire fortune was illegally obtained.

No matter how we feel about Saddam, to them he's still their grandfather. They're children.. be sad that his actions will cause grief to them.

Germany, France, Russia lent Saddam billions... I say we give them the legal mailing addresses of Saddam and offspring and let the countries sue them personally for those funds.

The Iraqi people had nothing to do with the debts... let the countries collect the money from the folks who are still living in palaces with it.

Great idea and since his daughters are still living high on the hog, they have some money.

His wife also stated he gave her $5 million when she left Iraq...

The daughters and wives could easily get jobs as domestic help somewhere... They're certainly familiar with what is expected of a maid ;-)
