They are indeed. NPR, for example, say "there is absolutely still a war going on (in Iraq)". When anyone who had studied any war beyond the most cursory level would realize we're in a very typical post-war period.

I shouldn't be surprised that reporters know virtually nothing of history beyond sound bites, but I suppose I am anyway.
