(Frankfort, KY, December 13, 2003, 12:25 p.m.) -- Republicans meeting today in Frankfort selected a candidate for a special election for Governor Fletcher's former congressional seat. She's state senator Alice Forgy Kerr of Lexington.
She won the nomination over state representatives Stan Lee of Lexington and Lonnie Napier of Lancaster. A fourth candidate was Chuck Ellinger the second, of Lexington.
It took two ballots for Kerr to get the majority needed in voting by electors from 15 of the 16 counties in the Sixth District.
Democrats plan to pick a nominee on Monday. Attorney General Ben Chandler is thought by many to be the front-runner, but State Auditor Ed Hatchett and Fayette County Margaret Kannensohn also want the nomination.

It's surprising that Chandler would run in a district that he lost in the last election. I think that Alice Forgy Kerr will outpoll him.

I'm confident we'll hold the KY-06. I'm more worried about the South Dakota House seat.

. . . Alice Forgy Kerr will outpoll him (Chandler.)10-4. We'll work hard to be sure she does.

No, she can't because she's more of a murderer than Janklow.
At the least we should have a 50/50 shot at retaining this seat. I believe Janklow's unpopularity in some quarters caused her to run up the margins a bit more than perhaps she would have against someone else.

I've been trying to find this info...should have known I would find it on FR first.
I'm pleased with the result.

I didn't know Hatchett was vying for the job. He would probably be stronger than Chandler as a candidate. Hatchett has high stature and didn't have weeks of negative ads running against him in the recent past.

Alice is a very good choice Wildcat.
She is a good Ky state senator.
Her brother in-law, the top notch KY state representative, Tom Kerr (who has proven to be more conservative and liberty-minded than most Republicans), recently changed party to the GOP.
Her older brother Larry, now a Fed appointed judge, was narrowly defeated for governor in 95 by the corrupt shenanigans of Paul Patton's union goons.
She certainly has the credentials to be a good GOP congresswoman.

That's possible, not not certain. Ed Hatchett ran for state Attorney General this year and was defeated in the 'Rat primary.
