President Bush signed the workplace verification bill to prevent hiring of illegal Aliens
S. 1685, the Basic Pilot Extension Act of 2003, was signed by President Bush on December 3, 2003.
It extends for five years the workplace employment eligibility authorization pilot programs created in 1996. It expands the pilot programs from the original five states to all 50 states.

Basic Pilot Extension Act of 2003Unfortunately, it's not mandatory. Do you happen to know how much funding Congress authorized for the program?

Whether illegals intend to work is not the point-it does not justify unlawful entry into the US. It's like saying it's okay if I break into your house if it is my intention to sweep the floor.

"people come to this country for opportunity"
They come to make this country into a third world country like the one they came from. I have no problem with those LEGAL immigrants who come to become citizens of the U.S. and are earnest about learning the language and being contributing citizens of this society. Unfortunately, the opportunities most come for are to drain U.S. resources, support their homeland, and keep a separate counterculture alive which is in direct contrast to what the most citizens of this country are working to achieve.

Thanks for the news from the Coachella Valley, from a former Riversider.
A bracero program is what is needed, not amnesty.

Its is COMPLETLY Voluntary act.
Employers are under zero obligation to participate.
S. 1685, the Basic Pilot Extension Act of 2003, was signed by President Bush on December 3, 2003.
It will extend for five years the workplace employment eligibility authorization pilot programs created in 1996. It will also expand the pilot programs from the original five states to all 50 states. Thus, all employers in the United States will have the option of participating, although the program would remain voluntary.
Those foreign owned copmanies and any deserious of lower labor will not participate and are under no oblication to do so.
Again Bush has been as successful at securing our border with Mexico as Clinton has.

"They talk about illegal immigration, and they want to get rid of all the illegal immigrants. ... What would happen at a state level if that were to happen?" said Castaneda, who is Mexican-American. "They'll realize that we are needed here." Umm, no...you're really not.
That's just something the politicos and the media have gotten you to buy into.
When we "need" people, we have a legal immigration process that needs to be followed.

I knew that it was only going to be voluntary (natch!) but how much funding did Congress allocate? Enough for a year, or what?
I'm in California and I'm going to start sending letters about this to local companies in my area (roofing, plumbing, etc.). Maybe they'll take the hint.

We definitely do not need more terrorists, drug smugglers, rapists, or any other kind of criminals. We've enough criminals as it is. If other countries choose to over-breed, that is their problem. We are no a dumping ground for their misfits and their surplus population.

um. the last time I checked, the illegal-alien license idiocy was just a bill, not a law.
"Hundreds of people angered by the repeal of a law" is thus a flavor of bias, not real news reportage.
Of course, they might have thought it was a law. Since they came here illegally, and thus never had to study civics, who can expect them to understand the way laws come about? Of course, I won't touch the lunacy of hundreds of FOREIGN CRIMINALS protesting American legislative processes...

Politicians refuse to close the border so I guess this is what we get. Sooner rather than later the citizens of America are going to get a belly full of this and then things will change.

Hundreds of people angered by the repeal of a law allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for driver's licenses took to the streets of cities around the state Friday to kick off a daylong boycott. Thousand of people angered by the illegal immigrant agenda took to the voting booths and got rid of Davis.
