If the plane was 10 miles from shore then to that closest person would a 4000 foot climb even come close to looking like a missile?

It's not a even 7° climb, and would hardly be noticable.

That's what I was thinking, yet witnessess swear they saw something go up from the horizon.

I can't believe that I never thought about apparent height of climb to distance before regarding this. But I'm no math brainiac.
