[history]
The White House yesterday said a new immigration review is under way that could lead to amnesty for millions of illegal aliens living and working in the United States.
Confirmation of the review came during a White House briefing, just two days after Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said during a town hall meeting in Miami that the government had to "afford some kind of legal status" to the 8 million to 12 million illegal aliens in the country.

Au contraire. Your comments had appeasement written all over them. Appeasement is surrender. Just ask Neville Chamberlain and Quisling No .. you are assuming in your mind that my comments had appeasement written all over them.

You are right that the American people dont want an amnesty for these criminals. And you are right that every politician knows it. You are mistaken if you think that matters a whit to Lyndon Baines Bush.I agree. It just struck me as funny.
It would be like running up a trial balloon to see if the American people wanted change the national language from English to Ebonics...Or the National Anthem to the Macarena.

What are the expected tax revenue benefits of 10s of millions more *documented* workers here? How does that compare to the expected costs (education, health). How many more new jobs will be created to service, educate, feed, etc., these new Americans? It's really not relevant since you should never reward illegal behavior, but I would have a hard time imagining there would be any major tax revenue benefit since these are low-paying jobs.
I'm not saying it's equivalent to letting somebody murder somebody else, and because they managed to evade arrest for a couple of years, they can walk, but it's rewarding illegal behavior. Last I checked, we don't have a bunch of liberals running the country.
In any event, in the aftermath of 9/11, we need to be even more careful about who we let enter and/or stay the country.
Rewarding these "new Americans" would only encourage more people to enter the country using illegal means and methods.

I've served in the U.S. Military and U.S. Peace Corps. People can obtain passports and travel abroad if they want to experience other cultures. Illegals need to be apprehended and returned to the border. Their 2nd apprehension prize is permanent internment in a desert camp sourrounded by claymore mines, rotating military reserve units and military attack rotor craft. Supplies will be via air drop. Make them build their own paradise and maintain their own policing within (much like the 'Escape from N.Y. film except make it a desert waste land). If illegals want to be here so much then lets accomodate them. The 1986 Amnesty did not work. Tom Ridge is stupid. He needs to be replaced by Ann Coulter! I, too, will sit the next presidential election out if the current occupant of the oval office fails 70% of the U.S. citizens who oppose run-a-way immigration.

Well however people decide to do it, there has to be some sort of pressure brought to bear on this administration over immigration. The only reason the California legislature rescinded drivers licenses for illegals was because the public would do it for them if they didn't.
Same with this, people are overwhelmingly against amnesties but the message hasn't gotten through yet.

Thanks; I called the comment line; I will have to register with a new party and drop out of all my Republican groups if this happens.
While our service men and women are putting their lives on the line overseas, we cave to Vicente?
Un-f-ing believable!!

The screws to turn are attached to congressional candidates. Write them and tell them that not only will you sit out the Presidential election, you're sitting out their's as well. If congress-critters in close races get the idea that
they may lose their seats because the head guy is pushing this amnesty sewage, they can pressure the top more effectively (fear is a great motivator).

I think when all is said done Jr. will surpass his father as far as the number gaffes he had to commit to cost himself re-election. Any president that's as oblivious to the will of the American people on issues like illegal immigration deserves to be tossed out of office on their ear.

It's the thought of the 'authorities' rushing into a communitiy and rounding up illegals......and what of their children born here?......and detaining them.......giving them due process.......then deporting them.......
This is a frightening picture of America.

No, the frightening thing would be to allow these law-breakers to remain here. They MUST be deported if this is to remain a sovereign country.

This is a frightening picture of America.
Not as frightening as the third world country that the United States will become if this is not done.

That's just it. I don't think ANY presidential contender is DUMB enough to be oblivious to the OBVIOUS. If they are, then perhaps an earlier poster is correct and we are reliving the fall of the Roman empire. If the passion of the representative sampling on this topic holds true for even a portion the massive majority against amnesty, then we should be considering that it's time for the nation's next "tea" party.
Maybe it's time for the grass roots to take their country back. I don't find a single thing about the "nouveau" demonrats acceptable....from the aclu to the "zeitgeist" of michael moore....BUT, I don't find the plan to cut them off at the knees by stealing their pet proposals a worthy idea either. PLEASE tell me how a MAJORITY in the house, the senate and the WH can allow this amount of time to pass while NOT ONE SINGLE JUDGE is seated!!!! How can Medicare be turned into a fiasco.....on and on ad nauseum.
The President, HIMSELF, said terrorism was the MOST important problem we faced. How in the hell does it get resolved by letting in ILLEGAL MASSES who are infiltrating state after state, city after city, town after town, with gangs, low-rent criminals, and throngs of thieves who are paid under the table, get free medical services, and feed from the public trough?
Giving our jobs away to Mexico (and the world) was not enough????? Now we encourage them to come here and take the rest? Educate them at the expense of our own children? This goes SO FAR beyond the realm of compassionate conservatism and into the arena of passionate stupidity that I just can't believe we even NEED to convince our so-called "leaders." Truly, I am wondering when our country was sold and for how much.
To: SUSSA
The main question is: how can there be federal laws on the books that make it clear that harboring or employing an illegal is indeed a federal crime but on the other hand we have various gov't agencies at the state and fedgov level that fall all over themselves to lavish welfare style benefits on these lawbreakers. Do we now have some type of gov't that operates on some sort of double standard where some people and corporations are more equal than others? It damn sure isn't constitutional any longer but operates more like a large corporation with multiple subsidiaries and codes to rule them with.
