BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two loud explosions rocked the Iraqi capital Baghdad late on Thursday and a large plume of smoke could be seen coming from near the compound housing the U.S.-led administration in the city, Reuters witnesses said.
Immediately after the explosions around 4 p.m. EST sirens could be heard coming from the direction of the U.S.-headquarters on the west bank of the Tigris river.

This would be unusual for a suicide bomber because they generally target daytime hours when more people are likely to be out.
It's taking quite a while to get information about these blasts.

That blast just woke me up. I had my window open and it was pretty loud where I'm at.
After the obligitory latrine break, accountability check and FR post I'm going back to sleep.
Details in the morning.

Ok, I'm not going back to sleep just yet.
As a witness to several close and loud explosions recently, I must disagree. This one was merely loud. It had a sharp initial crack and short, quick boom to it like a Katyusha as opposed to an 82mm mortar.
I haven't heard a car bomb yet, I don't think. My money is on the Mad Rocketeers. I think they sacked up and got out for a little mayhem to make the siren run.
I wouldn't rule out a car bomb either. These guys aren't quite motivated the same way. As long as an explosing makes someone crap their pants these guys consider it a success. If they can kid themselves that they accomplished something, it's a success in their eyes.
