NEW YORK (AP) -- Andy Pettitte chose home over history, agreeing Thursday to sign with the Houston Astros and leave the New York Yankees.
New York wasted little time in trying to land a replacement, closing in on a trade with Los Angeles that would send Kevin Brown to the Yankees for Jeff Weaver in a swap of starters, a baseball official said on the condition of anonymity.

The 3 best pitchers this town has ever produced in uniform at the same time = marketing bonanza.
Come on Moj! This is V-W Day! Ding-dong the witch is dead!! Jeff Weaver was Yankee cyanide, while Brown is a capable pro. I thought his performance ('98, SD?)against the Yanks was merely mediocre...
The only fear and downside to this is injuries, but if Boomer could come back, then so should Brown.
OTOH, what were Cashman and Steinbrenner thinkin' by not retaining Pettitte??
You would have loved Mike and the Mad Dog's hammering of Cashman on their show yesterday. Cashman admitted a $52m/4 deal may have kept Pettitte, and at that, they dangled it but with all kinds of strings. Ultimately Cashman then personally admitted he didn't think Pettitte was worth it! Dog and Francesa were both livid! The two of them not only thought he was deserved of it, but wondered how Cashman could let a guy like this walk IN HIS PRIME, when the Yanks were flinging at anybody and everybody millions for nominal players like Mondesi, Karsay, etal. The $39m the Yanks offered in Andy's mind wasn't enough for him to have stayed in NY over "home-town" Houston, but that $52m was....
The Yanks shot themselves this time -- you don't replace Andy arm, NOR character and leadership.
Really?? Andy's old man's dumb comments negate 149 wins, 4 rings, and a great Yankee?? Come on!
lol....alright, alright. You KNOW I'm thrilled to get rid of Weaver. I'm just a little skeptical about the health of KB. But as you correctly said last week, Brown running on fumes is much better than Weaver.
Cashman is the real wicked witch here. (The names Mondesi, Weaver, Boone, Ventura, and Claussen immediately come to mind). The guy should be run out of town on a rail. His moves almost always smack of desperation. .....and his latest one - not signing Pettitte - smacks of apathy, ignorance, and arrogance. The Yanks dissed Pettitte one too many times, it appears.
I'm sure Mike - what's the dude's last name? - is just killing Cashman. He'll doubtless have a few words to say about it this Sunday on Mike'd Up. Did you see last week's show? He started out by saying that he's not going to say a word about the Giants because their season is obviously over. I thought "yeah right," but Mike kept his word. ..Not a peep about G-Men disaster. The only good news on that front is that it appears that the Midgets are not even going to make their usual late-season surge ......so perhaps they'll get a decent draft pick out of it.
LOL!!!! Have you ever, actually MET a Red Sox Fan? If you have, I doubt you would not believe what they are capable of!
BTW, Sexton for Schilling isn't nearly a wash. Schilling's one of the very few bonafide stoppers in either league. The Red Sox pulled one heckuva move. Sexton's streaky hitting won't help much in 9-8 games.
Randy Johnson was lit up like a pinball last year. Has he got anything left?
Cashman is close to being chased by pitchforked and lanterned Yankee fans! You're right -- the guy has been pushing panic buttons since Mondesi -- with the Boone-Claussen trade THE metaphor.
"His [Cashman] latest one - not signing Pettitte - smacks of apathy, ignorance, and arrogance. The Yanks dissed Pettitte one too many times, it appears."
That's exactly what was being discussed on Mike (Francesa) and the Mad Dog today amidst irate callers as well as yesterday. NO call from Steinbrenner? NO wine and dine, and how "We need ya" like Wells, Mondesi, and Giambi got? NO "Andy, we want you to remain a Yankee Great -- what will it take?" WHAT IDIOTS!
Whitey Ford:"I'd like to call someone right now and bawl the heck out of him...I just can't believe it. It's crazy. And now they're wasting all their time with this other guy, Sheffield. I'm just very disappointed and upset with this."
"Did you see last week's show? He [Mike] started out by saying that he's not going to say a word about the Giants because their season is obviously over. I thought "yeah right," but Mike kept his word. ..Not a peep about G-Men disaster."
I haven't seem 'Mike'd Up' in a while. I know he's been totally disgusted with the Jints, and so have I. They quit looong ago. Nope, doesn't appear they'll win even one more game -- of which the best thing that can be said is a "decent draft," eh? And maybe next year they won't try starting four rookie offensive lineman because they're too cheap to retain proven veteran standouts.
What??!! 70 HRs?? LOL! Sexton was hitting those HRs with his team down most of the time, 7-2 late innings. He's a free swinger who can't hit in the clutch, but the stats will look great at years end. Aaron Boone was a prime example -- the guy hit .270 w/26 HRs and 96 RBIs.
When they turn on the lights at that proverbial closing time, Sexton will be that busty blonde at the end of the bar you've been coveting all night -- until you notice the large adams apple, big hands, and slight 5 o'clock shadow...
Ha see what comin'?? Talkin' 'bout Gonzo?? A lotta good it'll be when the Big Unit's back on the DL again in May while the D-Backs are forced to pitch AAA prospects. They picked up Sexton two years too late.
Four innings is more than the Dodgers will get ALL SEASON from Weaver...
And don't talk about "anything happening" -- you did watch Weaver give up a game-winning World Series HR to an .068 singles-hitter...right?? Coincidently, it was Weaver's fourth batter he faced in the game.
