NEW YORK (AP) -- Andy Pettitte chose home over history, agreeing Thursday to sign with the Houston Astros and leave the New York Yankees.
New York wasted little time in trying to land a replacement, closing in on a trade with Los Angeles that would send Kevin Brown to the Yankees for Jeff Weaver in a swap of starters, a baseball official said on the condition of anonymity.

I am in an NL only fantasy league. Gonna be a fun auction this year!
Pettite and possibly Garciaparra if A-Rod goes to Boston.

Someone I know who is privy to this situation has told me that the Yankees are very wary of re-signing Pettitte. Apparently there is some serious concern about a condition with his pitching elbow that could end his career at any time.

Wow...Pettite is one of the best lefties in the game.. for NY to not even make him an offer, a place where he has pitched his heart out, is inconceivable.

If they do, I'll be surprised. They have an all-star at every position, and they're fixing to trade for the best pitcher in baseball.
We'll see what happens next year, but I have a feeling that the Yankees will be playing late into October.

for NY to not even make him an offer, a place where he has pitched his heart out, is inconceivable. From the article: The Yankees offered the left-handed starter $39 million for three years, about $3 million more annually than Houston. But the Astros play near Pettitte's hometown of Deer Park, an important factor for the pitcher.

Read the story. The Yanks offered him $39M oveer 3 years, $3M more per season that the 'Stros did.

The Yanks haven't won the Series since New York elected Hillary.
Let's hope this is the start of a long curse.

Steinbrenner has never liked Pettitte and just about had him traded to the Phillies in 1999, but was talked out of it. He never seriously tried to keep him with the Yankees this time, either. There may be something to the talk that he is developing arm problems. Anyway, just by getting rid of Jeff Weaver the Yankees will be a better team. I've been saying, as a Yankee fan, that I would be happy to trade Weaver for any player on any team's 40 man roster. The guy is a mental case. The Yanks could get another 2-3 years out of Brown and by then will have accumulated plenty of other free agent pitchers.

The guy is a mental case... How come every time I see Pettitte pitch in the playoffs he's close to unbeatable?
He's a money pitcher when it's playoff time.

With all the talent they have had, any season that results in less than a championship is choking.

I was referring to Weaver being a mental case, not Pettitte. Yes, Pettitte has been a good big game pitcher. I'm not happy to see him go at all, I just think there are alternatives. He for sure won't win 21 games with the Astros with a 4.02 ERA and no closer. The fact that he agreed to a 3-year contract tells me he is not planning a long career.

tell ya what....Boston needs a Rudy. A curse buster
just because and being a serious D Backs fan,Craig
Counsell went to the Brewers in a clearing house
deal for Richie Sexton. If I was Boston,I'd fetch Counsell
in a f'in heartbeat. No. Sooner.
and just to prove I know baseball, I'd make Bill Buckner
my manager. If Buckner was to rope a World Series with
what Boston is buildin' no town in sports would yell
louder for Boston and for Bill. Ever.

The last couple years, they've had a lot of talent, but there was still some holes. Sheffield, arguably the best hitter in baseball taking over in RF for Mondesi and Brown taking over for Pettite are big improvements. Huge.
