TVA Reminds Those Living Near Nuclear Plants, Be Ready, Be Safe

Story by Anne Thompson on Wed, Dec 10th 2003 (10:28 PM)

TVA officials say 83,000 people live in the ten mile radius around the Sequoyah nuclear plant. And soon, they will be getting a calendar in their mailbox, full of safety tips in the case of a nuclear emergency.

More by Anne Thompson

Tennessee Valley Authority officials say they are required to send out the safety information, and the calendar is a good way to try and keep it in front of people all year long. TVA spokesperson Carol Ayers says the map included in the calendar shows the area aurrounding Sequoyah divided up into sectors. Ayers says residents living in those sectors should know which one they are in so they can listen for specific instructions in case of an actual emergency. There is also contact information for Sequoyah, the state of Tennessee, and county authorities if people have questions. The bottom line for folks living in the ten miles surrounding the nuclear plant is know what to do, and when to do it. Calendars should be arriving in residents' mailboxes soon.

Hmmmm, I'm about 30 miles away. Anyone know if they send out a calendar on this every year or is this a first?

full of safety tips in the case of a nuclear emergency

Step #1 Do not panic

Step#2 Check your pets and plants; if they begin to glow, consider moving to your "safe room"

Step#3 Flesh eating zombies may appear within 48 hours; do not taunt them.

I'd like to get a hold of a calendar to see how right on you are on Step #1.

I don't know if the nuclear plants do it, but the Pine Bluff Arsenal here sends out one of these calendars every year. They are full of info on evac routes and safety info and such.

Hmmmm, and I have a home about fifty miles away. I was planning to leave the city where I live within a mile of Eli Lilly to return to my TN home.
