Singer Bobby Brown was charged with battery Wednesday, three days after a fight with his pop star wife, Whitney Houston, left her injured Sunday.
Fulton County police spokesman Kurtis Young said Brown, 34, received a copy of the charge and was arrested after turning himself in Wednesday.
The former member of the teen R&B group New Edition is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing Jan. 7.
The volatile couple and their attorneys spent most of Wednesday afternoon with police in Fulton County Magistrate Court's North Annex in Dunwoody.
"The police wanted to basically give him a copy of the charge," his attorney, Maurice Bennett, said. "They are trying to work it out, as we speak, as husband and wife."
Houston declined comment, except through her attorney, Mark Trigg.
"She is trying to resolve the matter privately," Trigg said.
On Sunday, Fulton police responded to a call by Houston to the couple's home at the Country Club of the South near Alpharetta. Houston, 40, said Brown had struck her on the left side of her face with an open right hand.
The responding police officer saw a bruise on Houston's cheek and a cut inside her upper lip, police said. But by the time the officer reached the house, Brown was not there.
On Tuesday evening, police returned to the couple's home and spoke to Houston, police spokesman Young said.
Young said Brown had flown to California and police were trying to find and interview him.
However, Trigg said Wednesday that Brown did not go to California after the altercation.
Brown was released after serving seven days in DeKalb County Jail in August for violating his probation for a 1996 drunken driving conviction.
He was arrested at an Alpharetta restaurant where he was dining with his wife.

Follow-up piece from this afternoon.
From my blog's update this evening:
UPDATE (10 PM):Bobby's been charged with battery by Fulton County authorities. The wayward couple spent this afternoon at the Fulton County Magistrate Court's North Annex in Dunwoody.
WAGA-TV/DT (Fox 5) had "exclusive" pictures of Houston on their 6P newscast, sporting what appeared to be a bruise on her left jaw.
I'm left with the question that we've all asked about her since she got with that thug: Why?

I think they are both thugs. I liked BB a long time ago.. Whitney I never cared for.. but they are both out of control.

Sigh. Gone are the days of gentlemen pop stars.
Fer instance, Rick James would always take off his hat before burning his bitch with a crack pipe.
Ah, the good old days...

My favorite recent Whitney/Bobby photo was one they had taken in Israel with PM Ariel Sharon.
Whitney & Bobby were wearing these God-awful bright red muu-muu things. Ariel looked embarrassed for them.

If Whitney Houston is stupid enough to remain in this situation, then I find it increasingly difficult to muster much sympathy for her. My concern is for their daughter. She should not be exposed to his violence/drug use, and a mother with any shred of decency would leave for the sake of the child. Then again, if Whitney's still using drugs herself ... my hope is that little Bobbi turns out to be NOTHING like her parents.

How many times does this thug have to be arrested before he is given a long prison sentence?
It looks like another case of celebrity justice.

Jeez....who would have ever thought that something like this could happen?

Whitney & Bobby were wearing these God-awful bright red muu-muu things. Whitney was in court the last time Bobby got arrested. Her hair was purple and looked like it had been done with a chainsaw.
I passed the pair of them on the "autobahn" (Georgia 400) two weeks later. She still looked like she had been drug through the deep end of the pool by a speedboat and put away wet.

Wasn't it the Barbara Wahwah interview where Whitney said that Bobby has never hit her. I guess there's a first time for everything. Yep, that's it.
Given Mr. Brown's past and present behavior, he may not be long for this earth.

Singer Bobby Brown charged with battery after pop star wife reports fight at home
Formerly Brown charged himself with AC cords found in his home.
Insiders say that Brown moves with the aid of NiCad power. His ports are located laterally. :>)
