Email from Northwest Airlines concerning Hero Miles(heromiles.org)...

Thank you for your E-mail.

Northwest Airlines has a long history of providing special policies for active duty military during times of conflict. We presently have a number of generous policies in place for the servicemen and women who have been called to active military duty for Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Noble Eagle, or Operation Iraqi Freedom.

We are also supporting the United States militarys Operation Iraqi Freedom Rest and Relaxation (R&R) program with special discount fares for soldiers returning home for two weeks of R&R. Under this program, members of the military returning to the United States on leave may purchase a round-trip ticket for travel from Baltimore-Washington, Atlanta, or Dallas to their desired destination. Our fares provide the returning troops with flexibility, as many of them are receiving little or no advance notice of their R&R leave.

· Tickets are priced under $200.
· Tickets do not require an advance purchase.
· There is no minimum stay.
· Fares are refundable.
· Changes are allowed for no fee.
· Excess baggage fees are waived.

We also have special policies in place for wounded servicemen and their families. This allows family members to travel on short notice and at a discount to visit those injured during service in Iraq. The policies apply to the wounded military personnel once they are released from the hospital and able to visit their families.

Additionally, Northwest continues to offer special fares for all active duty military personnel & not just those serving in Iraq. These policies include the following.

· Tickets with no-advance purchase requirements.
· Extensions of elite status in our frequent flyer program.
· Refunds or free changes to tickets for those service personnel whose military orders for the Iraq War were in conflict with confirmed travel.

Currently, we are not participating in Operation Hero Miles. We have concluded that effectively distributing donated miles to our troops, in a way that is non-discriminating and equitable to all recipients, cannot be accomplished at this time.

Thank you for contacting Northwest Airlines,

Sincerely,

Irene James

kcvl,
thanks for posting the NWA notice.
I'm no expert on the airline industry, but I'd guess that NWA's decision to "go it on their own" for helping out our military is reasonable, as it probably "cuts out the middle-man".
The downside I could see is that the NWA program might not get the publicity that some of the other carriers get via the heromiles program.
And you may have seen posts on other threads about "montrosebeat" getting Delta to give his wife/kids a waiver on the 14-day purchase penalty once they arrive in the USA via military flight...so a tip of the hat to Delta for even bending a bit for dependents.

Bump.

Last night, my wife and I finally donated about 40,000 United miles. United matches, so that should be about enough for 3 round-trip tickets.

Just wanted to post an update I have seen today:

DENVER - Denver-based Frontier Airlines is among the latest to join "Operation Hero Miles," an organization that helps troops on leave from Iraq and Afghanistan fly home for free through donations of frequent-flyer miles.

The organization says 13 airlines have joined so far.

Airlines and travelers have donated 309 million miles, which is enough for 12,700 round-trip flights.

Frontier has donated 1.5 million miles to kick off its participation in the program.
