The latest government manual on how to make clear and safe markings on and near roadways includes suggestions of fluorescent pink signs, large print on road signs for older drivers, and "animated eyes" to caution pedestrians at intersections.

The 2003 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices is used by transportation agencies when they design traffic signs and signals.

It's incredible, isn't it? I think the problem is more laziness than stupidity.
In a world where we have the Gizmo cordless grater, I've lost hope that people want to even expend one bit of extra thought or energy.

Maybe we could employ the homeless to hold people's hands as they walk across the street.

...and audible devices to communicate to pedestrians.

Yeah, that'll work. The social engineers will demand that there be a keypad that allows the pedestrian to choose from 53 different languages and dialects, plus have an onsite signer for the deaf.
