Absolutely horrible ruling. If political free speech is not protected, what is?
To: Long Cut
this undercuts Soros and the unions, but it is a bad day for free speech.

And people think it's not important for Bush to be reelected? We have GOT to get some of our people on THIS Supreme Court!
A Republican Congress passed it and Bush signed it..... and this is why we need more of them???

You never voted for him in the first place.
Elect Dean or Hillary; see what better "constitutional dirt" you get.

First the wild spending spree and now this. George Bush has received the last vote he'll get from me. If I wanted this crap I could have voted for Gore Actually two of the Justices who probably voted for the ad bans, Ginsburg and Breyer, were appointed by Clinton. Are you going to let Dean appoint two more Justices like those two?

They are believers in the Old Jeffersonian myth that every man decides what the constitution means. But someone has to read it to them.

No it does not undercut Soros. It enables Soros. Kiss the republic goodbye.

I just love hearing the unfocused, visceral gnashing teeth around this joint.
Most of you lardasses have no desire or talent for free speech anyway. This law restricts you IN NO FREEPING WAY.
This is going to be a Bush Bashing thread. I wanted to bash you dismal aggrieved molemen in advance.
Bon Appetit Ace. Bash away.

O'Connor has abandoned any pretense of deciding issues according to law and the Constitution. She now decides according to her personal "feelings" about what is fair.

It's going to be the liberal broadcast networks versus talk radio. Parties have been cut out of the process. Hard money is king.

Because you and I know it denies us our freedom of speech! I cannot figure this court out, except that they have gone totally whacko.
You better believe that 2004 is OUR last chance to stop this!

The only "ads" leading up to an election will be the columns and editorials in the NYTimes, USA Today, etc.
Again, thank you George Bush - you are losing your base just like your pop. If you get reelected it will only be because you are enough of a Democrat for some.
Every time we give the GOP power they screw us.

Section 4. The times, places
and manner of holding elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each state by the legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by law make or alter such regulations, except as to the places of choosing Senators.
The Congress shall assemble at least once in every year, and such meeting shall be on the first Monday in December, unless they shall by law appoint a different day.
Pretty slim reed to hold onto. The explicit First Amendment IMHO would and should trump that mushiness.

Why should he change now?
To: Pikamax
This shift the money away from parties to the issue advocacy groups. The Soros money is perfectly legit. Look for a decline in the importance of the major political parties, particularly with regards to involvment in elections. Soft money will only get worse.
