The defacto First Amendment:

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

This has no affect on your right to speak. The NRA can still run NRA ads. They just can't say "Bush."

Did the "Daisy" ad say "Goldwater"? I only saw it once, and I was only six at the time, so I don't remember. But you get the point.

We can still plead our case without mentioning a politicians name.

We're not allowed to say that a candidate's stated positions would be bad, in other words.

Our groups appeal to American tradition.

I guess you're right. It is now a Tradition in this country to sit around discussing what we're STILL ALLOWED TO DO.

NOw go away and leave me alone; I told you I was sick of lemonade.

Makes sense when you think about it. While Bush's free pill legacy is raping our paychecks, our ability to speak out against such legalized theft will be hamstrung.

And there are folks out there that don't think the fight over court nominees matters. For me, it is the single-most important issue in the next election. I amy not think Bush and the current crop of spendaholic Repubs in the congress are as conservative as I'd like, but I'm gonna do everything I can to see to it that Bush is re-elected and there are more R Senators in the next congress. The makeup of the judiciary is that important!

I think it's time to buy one of the big three networks. A little help from some of you stock market gurus. How many shares of NBC, ABC, or CBS would have to be bought to have such a huge impact that the news programming would be forced to change to a conservative slant, thereby passing the no ad rules.

If church groups, constitutional groups, free republic and conservative groups suggest their members buy 100 shares of one stock and then gave proxies to a group interested in taking over ABC, can that be done?

If so, here is a way to get aroungd the media bias and the unSupreme court.

I'm going to work to put REPUBLICANS in office, rather than sit back and let the Democrats take back the power.

Well Stated and something the "Sky is Falling" crowd do not seem to realize whether on purpose or through their pack mentality led by a few anti-Bush types. And they call us Bushbots -- yeah right! Still would like to know who the Hillary supporters are on FR -- wonder if some are posting on this thread against the President like he made the ruling all by himself!

People need to read what this is all about before declaring the sky is falling on their freedom of speech.

Here is what it is all about in a nutshell PKM.

The SCOTUS has just affirmed Congress' right to repeal equal protection under the law in their quest for re-election.

(Musing about what is obviously not the intent of the law.)

Free Republic conducts "electioneering communications", by definition; and it is broadcast over "cable" and "satellite", by definition, to many people.

In future perhaps Jim may have to be careful to time fund raisers with regard to national and local elections.

This law could not be used in this fashion at this time. But as the internet contiues to rise as a general news medium it may.

I have been asking why a conservative doesn't buy a TV station for a long time -- hope this does it!

And people think it's not important for Bush to be reelected?

We have GOT to get some of our people on THIS Supreme Court!

Huh? Bush signed this, as dozens of others have pointed out. He failed in HIS Constitutional duty already. What makes you think he won't appoint people who agree with him. I think he will. He obviously thought this law was good and agrees with the majority of the court. I suspect he would be quite content to appoint people who would vote with the majority on this case.

This for me is a reason NOT to vote for Bush.

"I'm not supporting it. I was just saying that the liberal media doesn't have the power they once had with the advent of talk radio and the internet.

What you are forgetting here is the the "Media" still has the same pull on the "Unwashed Masses" that it always had, only now they can really rig the elections. I.E. CBS/ABC/NBC= most watched networks by the "common" voter.

Because it only ran once. There was an outcry after it was first aired.

And the daisy ad was not the sole reason Goldwater lost. Be real.

The public thought we controlled it even while Daschle did. It was all about perception. I didn't say I agreed with it. I was just telling you the rationale.

Well, guess I can't speak for all of the Republican base, but if we don't like Bush, we can always elect Dean or Clark or Sharpton or Braun or Kucinich or Kerry or Gephardt or Lieberman, et al. Anyone for drafting Hillary Clinton? They're all highly qualified candidates. One thing for sure, we'll have to study our voter guides long and hard this election. Wouldn't want to make any mistakes. Now, you Gore voters out there, be sure not to punch the chad for Buchanan this time. Bwaahahahahahhahaha!

In fact, the four liberals along with O'Connor voted in lock step FOR it. And Clinton appointed two of those liberals, Ginsburg and Breyer.

True. But the socialists would have lost on the NRA-style policy advocacy issue if O'Connor had not reversed the position she took in Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce opposing regulations restricting the American tradition of free and robust debate.
