Reports that main portions of McCain-Feingold are now being upheld! People currently wading through a decision of over 300 pages.

He didn't give his unqualified seal of approval. He thought that the SCOTUS would overturn it, though he agreed with parts of it.

He could still be right. There's 300 pages people are still sifting through.
Even though no one knows what happened yet, many freepers are ready to kill. Talk about knee jerk!

You are being a bit over the top to suggest, only on emotions I suppose, that Howlin is in a minority at FR....she is, in fact, in the majority...a large majority at FR believe that having a president who is at least on the same page, although not in agreement with every bullet point on the page, is preferable to having any leftist democrat in office.....it is called being practical...living in the REAL world....We do not subscribe to a "cut off our noses to spite our face" mentality of the "purist", and we tire of being labeled as unprincipled because we take a practical (what can be done) approach.

Having said that...I voted for Bush and will do so again, HOWEVER, he made a TERRIBLE mistake in signing this bill, and far too much of what he has done runs against my strongly social and economic conservative views....but, he is still the ONLY man with a chance to win that can assure that a Howard Dean from becoming president...and Dean would not ONLY allow further chipping away at the Constitution, he would SUBVERT it to the United Nations.

I never said that. You did. I personally don't care where you get your opinions. But if mine are different from yours, and you attack me, expect the same in return junior. The RNC blew this one by not opposing it. Time will tell who is right. In the mean time, any restriction on speech is dangerous. You may believe in what you want, but I think Hamilton had it right, over 200 years ago.

Do you actually think it will be reversed? This only helps incumbents. There may be people who run for office who intend to overturn this, but there won't be enough. The SC says you can abridge free speech to fight the specter of "corruption", whatever that is, so that's out of the bag. We're F'd.

I have been flipping back and forth between Fox and MSNBC since the news broke

Other than the initial skimpy reports, I have not seen a word about this story-they're spending all their time on Jacko, Whitney Houston, and other crime stories

I wonder- are they avoiding the story simply for ratings purposes(they think people will not understand it or care)or are they keeping it quiet because they like the decision because it gives them a near monopoly on effective political speech and they don't want people to realize that?

You know, I stood up for Howlin and you enjoyed slinging a remark my way.

I have news for you--those of us who realized WAY BACK WHEN that this was bad law were overruled by CONGRESS. President Bush gave the country what it had asked for, in my opinion, when he signed a bill that the MAJORITY had approved.

So if we can't be bothered to elect people who will uphold the Constitution, and then vigorously lobby those same people to keep a watch on the laws they create (over 13,000,000 laws at last count) we don't want the Constitution very badly, do we?

In my opinion, here's what will happen: The DEMOCRATS will break the hell out of this law, figuring they'll sort it out AFTER they win the election.

I think the Republicans should be prepared to immediately follow their example post-haste should that occur. That should tie up the USSC for a good four to five years.

Then (IMHO) he should come out now, tell the people of the United States that he signed the bill because he thought it contained more 'good' than 'bad,' and call for congressional repeal of the 'bad' parts, since the leftists on the court wouldn't correct it. There's nothing wrong with bashing the idiots in Congress who passed this monstrosity, or the activist judiciary who provided their 'seal of approval' - so long as he is serious about getting the problem corrected. I would love to see President Bush on the air, every night, calling for corrective action...
