Gov. Mark R. Warner said he was forced to break his no-tax-increase pledge because he had been misinformed about the gravity of the state's budget mess during his candidacy.

In effect, Warner said in an interview yesterday, he eventually chose to make good on the tax-overhaul pledge he made as a candidate in 2001 instead of the no-tax-increase vow.

"There are no new governmental entitlements," Warner said

EARTH TO WARNER:
CUT OLD ENTITLEMENTS AND DUMP DEAD WEIGHT FIRST!

FReepers and other like-minded enemies of BIG GUMMINT have a lot of work to do if we don't want a tax increase.

Wernur is going full court press; we're talking about a DimRAT w/ legacy, resume, and future office aspirations here combined with a bunch of job-scared office first/people last Republicans; a most dangerous combination.

Remember Tennesee's tax revolt?

The lace drawer wearing RINOs will nip this tax increase business in the bud if they think there is a potential for that to happen here. If they think it will pass quietly & Wormur will come out looking good, then they're w/ him.

We need some organization involving the NoVA & Hampton Roads folks who did such a great job on The Wernurs' last attempt, plus any others w/ enough sense to see through the Carpet Bagger's BIG TAX PLANS.

Here's how it will work:

Sales tax will increase 1%
Grocery tax will decrease 1.5% but the definition of groceries will be very specific, almost nullifying the benefits
The Car Tax Cut will never happen due to budget constraints and polls that show "Virginians" don't really care about the cut.
Income tax will increase for the "very rich" which is those earning over $80,000 a year or whatever the infamous 5% comes out to be.

I've got enough sense, just don't know how much my lone voice can do over here on the Eastern Shore.

Warner is trying to stop any economic recovery in Virginia by putting this into effect.

The game is to keep Virginians disgruntled about President Bush's no-recovery recovery and to have Virginia go Democrat next election.

He's been governor for TWO years and he's blaming the former GOP governor for the mess. Give me a break.

The only difference between Warner and Davis is that Virginia has a constitutional mandate to balance the budget. Otherwise we would probably find ourselves in the same mess as Calif.

On the pluse side, I read somewhere else that the tax on cigaretes will (might?) go up. This is good.

Not the tax going up, but it will cause the "smokies" here on FR to get their panties in a bunch. Very amusing.

That's not likely to work. As I recall, Algore didn't even bother to campaign in VA. The rats have no chance in VA, and our wonderful governor can't do anything about it.

If we hadn't beaten the first tax increase attempt, we would be looking at a 44% total increase in sales taxes if this increase passed. During the transportation referendum run-up last year, Warner conveniently left out the little tidbit that he was out to raise taxes anyway whether the referendum passed or not.

I think this thing is dead in the House of Delagates. I sure hope it is, because our RINO state Senators would love nothing more than to raise our taxes.

And of course, the Virginian-Pilot is coming out with polls showing that the majority of us can't wait to have our taxes raised, just like we wanted them raised last year. Doesn't matter that the referendum last year was beaten nearly 2-1 down here in Tidewater.

I wonder though. Our area is decidedly GOP. Of course, it's military. The North and West have a tendency to vote democrat. I don't trust Markey-Mark. I think he has lots of ambition and is willing to trash our beautiful state to fulfill it.

As well you shouldn't.

No question.

Gov. Mark R. Warner said he was forced to break his no-tax-increase pledge because he had been misinformed about the gravity of the state's budget mess during his candidacy.

This same dupe was pulled by Clinton in '92. A LOT of Republicans voted for Warner, largely because of this pledge, I wonder how they feel now.

The reform that is needed would be a REDUCTION in the income tax, or better yet its elimination. I would then consider being for an increase in the sales tax. Virginia would become decidedly more user friendly to business looking to locate here.

22% sales tax increase. This is how liberals urinate on lower income families. Taken as a percentage of total net worth, sales and excise taxes hit the poor a whole lot harder than they hit the wealthy.

You are correct, sales and excise taxes are inherently regressive.

A 22% sales tax increase and 300% cigarette excise tax increase is going to hit the guy making $20,000 a whole lot harder than the guy making $80,000.

Having recently relocated here from a state which claims it has NO sales, I admit the only place I really notice the sales tax is in the dollar store. Same chain and same prices as in Delaware, so I'm still getting used to remembering to add the sales tax.

But overall I have found that prices are by far lower here, particularly in the supermarket then in Delaware, because of all of Delaware's hidden taxes.
