"Senator Simon was an honorable man, "
"Endorsed" DEAN from his deathbed...
Birds of a feather.
Honor him as you choose. Endorsing DEAN is not particularly honorable in my book.
He died... a liberal extremist to the end... endorsing the openly draft-dodging, tree-hugging, america-hating democratic leader... Dean.
I can almost wonder if he really did. Almost.
Demos never fail to capitalize on an "timely death" as in Paul Wellstone's funeral "fiasco".

Rest in Peace, Senator. Were that you had only beaten Clinton back in the 1992 primaries...

Let's demonstrate that we're better than the DUmmies, and refrain from wisecracks. No argument from me but you're going to have to excuse my genuine, heartfelt, boundless enthusiasm should I outlive either Bill or Hillary Clinton.

One of the last decent democrats in the senate. Always a gentleman.
To: Maigrey
He seemed like a nice guy.

Rest in Peace, and thank you for serving our country.

God bless his soul. I didn't agree with him often, but he was a worthy adversary and a true gentleman.

The thing that most embarrassed Simon was that in 1948 he was a "Republican" and voted for the Dewey-Warren ticket. In later years, he became an avid admirer of HST.
To: RonF
Simon defeated Charles H. Percy in 1984 and retired in 1996, passing his seat to fellow liberal Dick Durbin.
To: truth_seeker
Was Simon just 19 in 1948? He said he voted for Dewey, when the voting age was 21. So wouldn't he have been born in 1927?
To: xzins
Dean is an America-hating socialist.
Bill Kristol has just come out with a column saying that Dean could well be elected next year. And this is after Bush does what Kristol says he should do for the most part.
To: Blood of Tyrants
Wat to bet whether or not he votes in the next election?
Well, Simon came from Carbondale (or thereabouts, I am not sure of his exact city) in deep south IL, not from Chicago. So he may NOT be voting in 2004.

From ComerPerro, in an entry entitled "Its just all bulls%$#."
"These are the most pathetic, hateful people one the planet. With FReepers, there is always an alterior motive.
Sure, they are being classy (some of them) in this instance, but who really gives a s$#%. Most of the time they are ruthless mother$#@%^$#. One small act of class doesn't impress me.
Besides, they are only paying "respect" so they can congratulate themselves for being so classy. They can (and will) all go to hell.
The epitome of class...

how WILL we react when Bill Clinton dies?
Well, how can one not be sure that Bill Clinton will outlive practically everybody in his generation? It seems like the Democrat "gods" have long smiled upon and will continue to prosper and reward the clintons. It's all in the Bible: how the unjust get rewards in earthly living and the just are often punished by evil.

You've got the perfect description (it's like the twisted Bizarro Universe version of FR, where basic concepts of nature and humanity are inverted).
To: AmericanInTokyo
The one thing he did say, one of the few things, that I ever supported, was his constant harranguing that America needed to promote greater foreign language fluency across the board by many of its citizens.I would prefer that every other country learn to speak American.
To: Theodore R.
Maybe the numbers about his age don't add up, and he wasn't even 21 in 1948. Maybe he made up the story about his voting for Dewey because he was first a Republican like his father. Remember, other candidates for president have "embellished" their life stories too.
To: Amerigomag
That's an entirely different matter. You'll get no argument from me.
To: dead
With a name like yours I would think you had a scorecard :)
