In your dreams, Deb. 60% of Americans oppose gay marriage. Sure, President Bush will just ignore them. Makes sense.

But he will ignore it!
I'm 99% sure that there will be no Bush ads, or speeches, or dedicated campaign literature on the subject. He will say that he opposes gay marriage if he is directly asked about it, but will insert a clear qualification that he "supports equal rights for all Americans" and will quickly change the subject. A statement to the same effect will be buried on page 14 or 32 of the Republican platform. In fact, because Howard Dean won't see any advantage in discussing it, Bush and Dean will probably require that it be ruled out as a topic in the debates.
That doesn't mean it won't be important. In fact, more than anything else, gay marriage will zero out Dean's hopes to campaign on his less-than-confiscationist gun policy and his desire to appeal to guys with pickups and confederate flags and whatever, as well as any hopes of winning in Florida. 2004 will be 2000 refought, with the hope that enough people in Ohio or Missouri will feel less well off in 2004 than four years before to move to the "D" column.

President Bush sure is ignoring the vast majority of Americans who want our borders dealt with. Why should one think he won't repeat such a performance with regards to gay marriage? A bill that would create a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage is making its way through the House - why no support by Bush? Here's his chance.

60% of Americans oppose gay marriage. Sure, President Bush will just ignore them. Makes sense. Certainly does, I think the opposition to open borders is about 75% and he ignores that.
