In another article yesterday in Star-Ledger, the paper puzzled over the fact that in Pennsylvania and New York State, a number of bears equal to the total estimated bear population in ALL of New Jersey is shot every year during hunitng season with no complaints from animal rights wackos.
REASON?? New Jersy has become an escape zone for far leftist elements from the Five Boroughs of New York, fleeing their own madness. They bring with themselves the same idiotic philosophies which have made New York City unlivable. They include Greens, Animal Rights wackos, crypto-commies, socialists and anti-gun nuts. Like flies drawn to a rotting carcass, their surging numbers attract more of their own kind, resulting in what we are witnessing there over the bear hunt.

"Animal rights activists are making their feelings known today, beginning with a 5 a.m. demonstration at Wawayanda State Park. Some have said they will videotape hunters -- hoping the images will turn the public against future hunts -- and may even shield bruins with their bodies."
promises....promises....;)

Hunt bear with a 12 gauge? As far as I am concerned a .45-.70 would be the minimum I would want to start with, even for a black bear.

Back east there are so-called "shotgun states" where hunting with rifles (except rimfires) is forbidden, usually due to population density. A good slug gun with a sabot slug should suffice for black bear if placed properly.

Some have said they will videotape hunters >>
We should tape them! As well as the legislators who vote against the 2nd Amendment and Pro-life issues.

Good point. I hunt in the west, where we can use a rifle, so sabots are not part of my shooting experience.

I was referring to the sheilding the bears with their bodies bit....too funny. I would just LOVE to see how the animal rights wacko's would pull that off....I'm sure the bears would be so gratefull to have some nut job throw themselves on top of them....can you say LUNCH, Yogi?
To: Khurkris
I checked out a sabot round and 1500 fps and near 500 grains sounds like it would do the job with authority. I regularly shoot 1600 fps with a 400 grain JSP in my .45-.70 so I can see the similarity.

Yep, that's what I meant, we should tape the Animal Rights Activists. They are a weird and hysterical bunch. Some are terrorists (greenpeace, PETA, ELF) in their own right.

They've come a long way in the past few years. Remington has one that is a 1 ounce conical hollowpoint solid copper with 100% weight retention. It has a muzzle energy of 2300 ft/lb and a 100 yard drop of less than 3". Considering that the rifled barrel slug guns mount scopes now, I'd say it's good competition for the .45-70 out of a Marlin Guide gun for example.

Like flies drawn to a rotting carcass...Well, that'll draw the bears, too!
They can do lunch with the watermelons!

A Guide Gun is what I shoot (among other weapons) and yes those numbers are very comparable. You learn something new every day here at FreeRepublic.

Maybe they'll end up like that guy in Alaska who wanted to live with grizzlies--so they ate him and his girlfriend.

1500 fps and near 500 grains That ought to work. If you run up against a brown bear, probably 25-40 of those ought to work.
