They've come a long way in the past few years. Remington has one that is a 1 ounce conical hollowpoint solid copper with 100% weight retention. It has a muzzle energy of 2300 ft/lb and a 100 yard drop of less than 3". Considering that the rifled barrel slug guns mount scopes now, I'd say it's good competition for the .45-70 out of a Marlin Guide gun for example.

A Guide Gun is what I shoot (among other weapons) and yes those numbers are very comparable. You learn something new every day here at FreeRepublic.
