ITHACA -- Two local peace activists recently returned from Iraq with vivid memories of a country torn apart by war.
Danny Burns and Peter DeMott went to Baghdad and other Iraqi towns as members of Christian Peacemaker Teams.
After 10 days in the Iraqi capital, they said they are convinced the war was fought for oil, not necessarily to rid the country of Saddam Hussein. Of all the government buildings that were blown apart by bombs during the war, the Ministry of Oil is still standing, untouched, they said.

After 10 days in the Iraqi capital, they said they are convinced the war was fought for oil, not necessarily to rid the country of Saddam Hussein. Of all the government buildings that were blown apart by bombs during the war, the Ministry of Oil is still standing, untouched, they said. But if it was about oil, why not bomb the hell out of the ministry and then claim we needed to bring in an American company because of the ministry's destruction?
Answer: Because it wasn't about oil.
they went to Karbala, a town where a mass grave of people killed during the Saddam regime was located...[the Iraqis] are happy that Saddam has been removed
So, let me get this straight: They saw the mass graves, they heard how happy the Iraqis were that Saddam was removed, and let they still oppose the war, still claim it was for oil and still attack our troops as occupiers, not liberators.
They obviously don't want the truth, they want to attack the President.

Where are all the human shields when it comes to protect our troops. They had no problems staying to protect Saddam.
Or is it only patriotic to to protect Saddam but not our troops.

Burns said the family told the story of the firefight over a meal of lamb and rice.
They said stories like that are common in present-day Iraq.
hmmmmmmmm, I noticed the absence of candles for peace at the dinner. Was a warm and huggy meal I guess. Wonder how the dinner hour went under Saddam's rule?
Did they discuss war for oil

After 10 days in the Iraqi capital, they said they are convinced the war was fought for oil, not necessarily to rid the country of Saddam Hussein. I am certain these individuals went there with such open minds. At least they were unable to deny how evil Saddam was. Their preconceived beliefs on the reason for the war are meaningless. The one piece of anedotal evidence doesn't prove anything.

According to the
washington post.. the shields may be a little busy...
She was worried about passing through U.S. Customs -- after all, public officials have suggested that the shields' behavior is criminal, that legal sanctions could take place. But she wasn't hassled; her one small bag wasn't even searched. At home, though, was a letter from the Treasury Department. The letter -- sent to any American shields the government has been able to identify -- spells out sanctions, demands an accounting of her activities in Iraq, and threatens punishment ("up to 12 years in prison and $1 million in fines") if she has violated any sanctions. Fippinger has 30 days to comply. Richard Newcomb, director of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, says he cannot comment on what actions might be taken against the shields.

I'm still waiting on that Kuwaiti oil from the last gulf war. Wasn't that war of oil too?

Of all the government buildings that were blown apart by bombs during the war, the Ministry of Oil is still standing, untouched, they said.
This grammar used in this sentence resists all attempts to be diagrammed.
It opens with an inclusive group of all buildings that were blown apart by bombs, then blindly shifts gears to discussing a building that is part of a group that was not blown apart by bombs. How about an accounting of all the buildings that were not bombed?
Oh, wait, this is Ithaca, and even grammar must bow to the PC agenda...
