WHO Chief Presses Rich Nations for More AIDS Cash (hand me your wallet)

BRASILIA, Brazil (Reuters) - The head of the World Health Organization (news - web sites) on Sunday urged rich nations to provide more money to fight AIDS (news -web sites), which is devastating African nations.
WHO Director General Jong-Wook Lee called on Britain, Japan and Scandinavian nations in particular to donate more money to the organization's global push against the disease, estimated to be killing 8,000 people a day.
"The trend is more money is becoming available, we have to put in more requests and suggestions and pressure to the countries," said Lee, in Brazil for a global health conference.
He said "very urgent action and not the business-as-usual approach" was needed.
Funding to battle HIV (news - web sites)/AIDS has increased from $3.2 billion in 2002 to $4.7 billion but is still less than half the yearly total the United Nations (news - web sites) has called for to fight the epidemic and provide drugs to treat people infected by HIV.
The WHO earlier this month unveiled plans to rush life-saving antiretroviral (ARV) AIDS drugs to 3 million of the world's poor by 2005 and train 10,000 health workers.
Lee said HIV had now infected nearly 40 percent of people in Botswana and half the population would die of AIDS unless urgent action was taken. Life expectancy in Mozambique is expected to fall to 27 years due to the disease.
In 2002 around $1 billion was spent on fighting HIV and AIDS in Africa, which is thought to have nearly 30 million of the 40 million people infected by the disease.
The United States has promised $15 billion over five years to combat AIDS, especially in Africa. It has come under fire for only earmarking $2 billion for the program next year.
Earlier this year, Britain said it would give a global AIDS fund $280 million through to 2008 after initially pledging $200 million for five years in 2001.

Now that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. Instead of spending money on curing AIDS, why don't we give these imbeciles in Africa and other places the information that raping virgin babies will NOT cure AIDS. Probably wouldn't do any good anyway.
Where do you get the idea that I am for spending more money on these hopeless causes? Or are you just jumping on the bandwagon on me,did you even READ my post? My whole point was to the fella that said that AIDS was spread by homosexuality and his total and complete ignorance.

Well, the US should fund all AIDS programs worldwide.
After all, it's Reagans fault.

Hey, Einstein....what % of homosexual/bisexuals are MONOGAMOUS? Compared to heterosexuals? What's the average number of "partners" for homosexuals/bisexuals vs. heterosexuals? THAT's the point.

P.S.....also, go do a little research....everyone is NOT CONVINCED that "protection" protects AGAINST AIDS....
Are condoms a good way to keep from getting AIDS? "Condoms will reduce your chance of infection, compared to having sex without any form of protection. Nonetheless, one in three AIDS victims will contract the disease from an infected partner despite 100% use of condoms. One study found that among married couples where one partner was HIV-positive, 17% of the uninfected spouses contracted the disease, despite the use of condoms. The best way to prevent AIDS is abstinence. More about HIV/AIDS.... "

I find it very interesting that you used the Leftist buzzword "homophobia". That Orwellian manufactured phrase isn't accepted in the Conservative lexicon, but it is a favorite among the Guilt Merchants.

There are many sterotypes of conservatives and you people are filling every damn one of them. Sterotyped by who? The liberal left's "tolerance of all sin" propaganda?
That's a bad thing because......????? I don't see a problem here. Enlighten me.

No, the stereotype of the fact that your hatred of anything that you aren't, is based on complete and total ignorance. I'm not getting into a debate on what's right or wrong regarding homosexuality. My point from the very beginning is that some people's hatred of homosexuals is spreading ignorance on the spread of AIDS.

Find it "interesting" all you want. I always thought it was an overused word among liberals... untill I read this thread here today.

Surely you don't think that the marraige keeps people MONOGAMOUS do you? Gasp! You mean married HETEROSEXUAL people don't cheat? Wow, what a misconception I had. Maybe that's the ticket, if we want homosexual to stop being "promiscous", maybe we SHOULD just go ahead and grant them the right to marry. Then we can solve the issue, right?

"This is the kind of moronic crap that libs have a point on."
I see that you have only been posting on here since October. Let me be the first to say, welcome to the forum!
I have been reading many of your comments, and the comments of others, and have concluded that you are either a liberal, or your a conservative that is concerned about how the left views the right.
I hope you realize that no one here really cares how the left "Feels" about the right.
Concerning the subject matter at hand, I personally know that the majority of AIDS in this country has been spread by the homosexual community, and that those who are infected here are primarily homosexual men. This conclusion of mine, is based on statistical, and not political fact!
In my saying this, I can and will be labeled by the left as " Homophobic", and as being "insensitive" to the suffering of those who are infected. Which is not a valid assumption, because I am not afraid of homosexuals,( I am repulsed by them) and I personally wish that everyone could be happy, healthy, and that there could be peace on earth for all mankind. How this happens (and it someday will) is not to be at the hands of man however.
In the mean time, all the rattling and bantering back and forth over how or why someone states their opinion about this delima, is not stopping the spread of the disease.
It is safe to say that most people in the world today, know how the virus is spread and therefore, are able to know how to keep from contracting it.
But it is also safe to say, that the spread will continue if only words and money are continually thrown at it.
Until those engaged in the conduct that is positively known to spread the disease, change their behavior, (iv drug use, or perverted sex) then they will probably contract it, and most likely die from it.
And it's nobody fault but their own, and that is my humble opinion.

First, I am not a 'liberal', I am however a person who does not share the intense hatred of homosexuals as most who have posted on this message board. I am actually more in line with the libertarian views in the sense that it is none of my business who sleeps with whom. Although in my life, I live as a conservative and teach my children that we don't do what others do, but we don't judge. Not our job. As far as caring how the liberals view conservatives, well it's not I "care", it's that the biggest thing I hear is that conservatives are "ignorant and hatefilled" and I have defended the conservative view point and stated that it's not that they are hatefilled, just disagree with someone's choice. I am now seeing I was wrong in some cases.
>I hope you realize that no one here really cares how the >left "Feels" about the right.
As you shouldn't, but I, me, myself and I think that most of the people that posted on this forum show ignorance to the extreme. That's my opinion and my comment on the libs being right, is right to me. Most have shown on here that they ARE ignorant and hatefilled. So I was AGREEING with them on that stance. That doesn't make me any less conservative, or anymore liberal.
>Concerning the subject matter at hand, I personally know >that the majority of AIDS in this country has been spread >by the homosexual community, and that those who are >infected here are primarily homosexual men. This >conclusion of mine, is based on statistical, and not >political fact!
Please post your statistical facts. The fact that the AIDS problem in this country wasn't an issue. It was the AIDS problem in AFRICA that this debate got started on and yet still someone siezed the moment to bash someone else. Furthermore, unless you are having sex with homosexual men, what do you care?
>It is safe to say that most people in the world today, >know how the virus is spread and therefore, are able to >know how to keep from contracting it.
Well, according the brilliant fella above, all you have to do is "just say no to gays", (rolls eyes)
>But it is also safe to say, that the spread will continue >if only words and money are continually thrown at it.
Now THAT is agreed on.
>Until those engaged in the conduct that is positively >known to spread the disease, change their behavior, (iv >drug use, or perverted sex) then they will probably >contract it, and most likely die from it.
Define "perverted sex" please. Why gosh gollies, you just might find that many conservatives practice 'perverted sex' as well. Maybe not same sex, but please do define it, because last I heard, AIDS can be contracted through regular ole missionary vaginal sex. Shoot, blows your "bad behavior" causes AIDS spiel. Now, if you REALLY want to avoid AIDS, then be a virgin and marry a virgin. And don't do IV drugs.
>And it's nobody fault but their own, and that is my >humble opinion.
Individual responsibility is what I have been saying all along. From homosexuals and heterosexuals. It is just completely ridiculous in my opinion, to blame the AIDS problem in the world on gays (and primarily the assumption that ALL homosexuals sleep with record number of people and spread it everywhere) It lacks in scientific fact and it reeks in hatred and ignorance. I am NOT saying someone can't dislike, disagree or even get sick from the thought of homosexuality, but don't let your judgement override common sense.

I appreciate your response and I agree with many of your views, and would like to respond to some of them.
"Please post your statistical facts. The fact that the AIDS problem in this country wasn't an issue. It was the AIDS problem in AFRICA that this debate got started on and yet still someone siezed the moment to bash someone else"
The facts that I am implying are supplied by the AMA, and have been reported in the past, on all the National and cable news networks, as well as national print media.
"The fact that the AIDS problem in this country wasn't an issue"
Of course it's an issue, because it is close to home, and AIDS is the same no matter where it is being spread, or how!
"Well, according the brilliant fella above, all you have to do is "just say no to gays", (rolls eyes)"
Not at all. You just need to be manogomus with the same unaffected person that you are committed to! But I thought that you were smart enough to figure that out, so I didn't say it in the posting.
"Define "perverted sex" please"
Putting your member in improper places of people or animals, where it doesn't belong! And of course, I should have included promiscuous sex in the mix!
"I am NOT saying someone can't dislike, disagree or even get sick from the thought of homosexuality, but don't let your judgement override common sense."
I am deeply saddened that you think that I, and others who post here are that simple minded. Your comments are nothing that I havn't heard before, and unfortunately, you do sound like a leftist.
Alas; It is obvious that we are not as enlightened as yourself on the issue of gays,AIDS, and pc thought. But keep trying sunryse, you may teach some of us good ole boys yet!

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that not blaming the world AIDS problem on homosexuals (which is really misleading, I suppose you mean those mean ole MALE homosexuals, because it isn't much of an issue with lesbianism) made me a "leftist". I'll say it to you and the others on this board. You ARE simpleminded.
