More than likely, the e-mail is not huge, it's just that Outlook froze. Do a ctrl-alt-del and see if you can get your task manager or application manager open. If so, you can end Outlook safely and do a normal reboot. If the computer is hung completely, just turn it off. Wait a few seconds, turn it on, and the problem potentially solved.
I have seen a few cases where a specific e-mail can cause Outlook to hang just in the process of downloading. If that's the case, there's a bit more we'd have to know about your e-mail system to do a work-around.

Before deleting any programs try killing the process. Ctrl/Alt/Del or Ctrl/Shift/Esc
On Applications tab - highlight Outlook Express - then click End Task.
On Processes tab - find msimn.exe, highlight - then click on End Process.
If this fails, reboot or End Process on EXPLORER.EXE, on Application tab - click New Task - type explorer.exe - hit Enter.
All should be "peachy" again - except of course the lost message you were receiving.

telnet into your pop server and delete the message manually. We're dealing with a Microsoft user who runs Outlook. I don't think folks like that can operate a telnet client and manually issue POP commands without inflicting self-injury. ; )

Sounds like it keeps timing out on the message. Click Tools then click Account on the bottom. In there look for your mail account (under mail) and click properties to the right. Click on the last tab to the right and then set your timeouts up to 5 minutes. Then wait it out. If this fails most ISPs have webmail. Go to your ISPs homepage, log in, and delete the message.

My thoughts as well...a web interface would accomplish the same task, however. Just get the e-mail out of the account without using Outlook - that's all we need to do.

First - as others have said - do the ctrl-alt-del thingie but do it twice to reboot.
When you get back online, download PopMan at http://www.ch-software.de/popman/ and always check your e-mail with it BEFORE opening outlook.

If it was a large message on your ISP you could probably poke around Outlook's settings and tell it to just download the headers of the email, see what it is, and then delete it.
Or be l33t and telnet in and do the POP commands by hand.

I prefer 00 buckshot since it doesn't penetrate into the neighbor's house plus it leaves a much bigger hole. :-)

Hey, no fair rebooting so fast! Some of us hadn't even had a chance to provide our helpful suggestions!
My suggestion involves a lot of patience and a 6 pack of your favorite beverage, or your favorie snack, slowly and lovingly consumed. Too late now.
