Personally I think this level of stupidity transcends political affiliation.Personally I don't think it's stupidity. I think it's deliberate and designed ab initio to prepare school children to expect and obey the dictates of authoritarian groupthink, no matter how obscene or irrational they may be.
I cannot believe that the whole community would not be up in ARMS over expulsion for a legal pain medication that can be legally purchased by any minor at any time. The fact that parents remain silent and excuse this on the basis that `it's what "Zero Tolerance" requires' only shows how successful this form of programming is.

Their talent is attacking, etc., our CHILDREN, while advocating and passing laws that prevent parents from fighting back

>> I'd find the sleaziest lawyer in New Orleans and sue the hell out of them. <<
That might work, but it is exactly the thing that has produced the zero tolerance policies in the first place. For over 40 years now, liberal judges have been removing the ability of the schools to set standards and enforce discipline. It has gotten where zero tolerance policies are the only ones that stand a chance of holding up to judicial review. Then the very people who voted liberals into office complain about the end result.
At one time schools were able to help teach students, respect, manners, neatness, personal grooming and other elements of civilized behavior. Today they are strugling just to keep out the weapons and dope. It didn't happen because educators wanted the system to slide downhill. It happended because complacent, self-centered parents abdicated their responsibility both at home and at the polls.

Wow! Incredible. I never understood people like you. :)
The compulsory age requirements continue to worsen. The state tries to get kids away from their parents earlier and earlier. I'd not be surprized if some states were getting them at 3 and won't allow young people until quite old.

Administering medication is a parent's job. She can also go to the office if she can't "make it" without an asprin until 3:30 pm. My two-cents worth. I agree that it's a parent's job. If I give my child medicine--over the counter or prescribed--and instruct my child when and how to take it while in school, then I've done my job. In the People's Republic a law was passed allowing schools and day cares to administer medication with a parent's and doctor's permission (including having the bottle of medication with the pharmacy label on it in the school's hands). This removed liability from the teachers doing it, and makes sense for very young children and for complicated administrations. However, school districts have taken it upon themselves, as a followup to this law, to implement policies saying that a child can only take medication under these terms. What a hassle to obtain two bottles from the pharmacist, a permission slip from the doctor, and to have to write a permission slip yourself when the medication is administered simply and by an older child. It's a case of bureaucrats going way too far.

Getting thrown out of a Louisiana public school is like getting evicted from a dumpster.

One thing I'd never ever accuse you of r9etb is not being aware. No one could. Didn't mean to imply that. I was mostly wondering how you came to your conclusion.

Much as I'd like to rag, I grew up with my father's name, even after my mother remarried. (Stepdad didn't adopt me.) I'm kinda glad . . . Stepdad's surname rhymes with some AWFUL words.

An excellent point you make. You bet it's deliberate.
I think it's deliberate and designed ab initio to prepare school children to expect and obey the dictates of authoritarian groupthink, no matter how obscene or irrational they may be. But, I think one time lurker is right that republicans and democrats both are part of this deliberate design. It always comes back to power.

I was just thinking the same thing when I read your post. Do they confiscate the inhalers of asthmatics? From what I have heard, they confiscate the inhalers in many schools. If a student has an attack, he needs to go to the nurse to get his inhaler.
To: SaveTheChief
Someday, this zero-tolerance policy will cost a young boy or girl with asthema his or her life. There was another thread not long ago about a high school boy who noticed his asthmatic girlfriend was having trouble breathing--she had forgotten her inhaler. Since he suffered from asthma too, he lent her his inhaler. Of course he was suspended from school for the unauthorized medicating of another student. Never mind that he saved her life and acted with common sense.

What don't you understand about "mass punishment?"
A certain element of undiserables bring drugs to school. Therefore rather than rid ourselves of these undesirables it is necessary to punish all of you for their behavior.
Abandon all hope. The public school system is broken beyond repair.

"a New Orleans high school student, Catrina Lewis, who was delayed by security guards before being allowed to get her inhaler from the office. When it didnt help, she asked school staff to call an ambulance; instead they spent a half-hour trying to call her mother first. Catrinas sister, another student, finally called 911 herself, but emergency help arrived too late." Reading this angers me, and it should anger everyone. Can someone please tell me if anything is being done to prevent this from happening again, or does the zero-tolerance thing protect teachers and administrators from this extreme act of negligence?
What a wonderful world we live in. We can give a teenager birth control without consulting parents, but we cannot give her prescribed medicine to save her life. I hope those responsible for the above are serving hard time for facilitating the death of this child.
To: DeFault User
I remember that thread. The actions of the girl's boyfriend saved her life. The parents of both students were angry at the school officials for their actions and both students were punished. I guess that school would have let her die too.

Thank G-d I have no kids in public school. This zero-tolerance policy is madness!!!
Did you vote for your school board? After all they are following the wishes of those who elected them...
