A child does not need to pack around a bottle of pills and decide when to self-medicate. Administering medication is a parent's job. She can also go to the office if she can't "make it" without an asprin until 3:30 pm. My two-cents worth.

Yes, and perhaps when you are considered to be a senior citizen, the powers that be will have you check in with them, and decide whether you may have an Advil or not.

We'll have to disagree on this. I don't believe the school board expelled the girl with Advil in fear they would be breaking the law.

Yeah, this poor girl will never be able to run for public office, since she was expelled from school for possession of "drugs." (Unless she runs as a Democrat, in which case, all will be forgiven.)

However, Kruithof said he didn't know if the category covered nonprescription, prescription and illegal drugs or only nonprescription drugs.

And he doesn't think it appropriate to clear his ignorance up before finding her guilty?

Oh I forgot, Zero Tolerance was instituted so he wouldn't have to think.

All these repressive school policies share a common idea; children are being trained to live in a police state and think of it as perfectly normal
The same with surveillance cameras everywhere- even some people on this forum defend their omnipresence.

'You are ruling over us for our own good,' he said feebly. 'You believe that human beings are not fit to govern themselves, and therefore --'

He started and almost cried out. A pang of pain had shot through his body. O'Brien had pushed the lever of the dial up to thirty-five.

'That was stupid, Winston, stupid!' he said. 'You should know better than to say a thing like that.'

He pulled the lever back and continued:

'Now I will tell you the answer to my question. It is this. The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just round the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me?'

Do you think the outcome would have been any different if the student had been an 18 year old senior?

When I was in school no one had to make me go to school. I went 11 years without missing a day. A cousin went all 12 years without missing a day.

"Someday, this zero-tolerance policy will cost a young boy or girl with asthema his or her life."

I was just thinking the same thing when I read your post. Do they confiscate the inhalers of asthmatics?

Gee, if she's going to be expelled for one year (for nothing) she should at least get her money's worth: she should have sucker punched the principal.

You can't be a Lord of the Rings fan, because an intelligent LotR fan would know that such rules and laws are products of the mind of Sauron.

This is a consequence of the Drug War but also the elite's war on Guns(suspending kids for making guns with their fingers) and the new wars "against Intolerance" and War on Junk Food.

Soon, they'll just go the extra mile and imprison people for any imaginable offense---maybe even execute them.

It already has:

"a New Orleans high school student, Catrina Lewis, who was delayed by security guards before being allowed to get her inhaler from the office. When it didn’t help, she asked school staff to call an ambulance; instead they spent a half-hour trying to call her mother first. Catrina’s sister, another student, finally called 911 herself, but emergency help arrived too late."

Unbelievable! What motivation!

My youngest almost made last year w/o missing one day, but she became ill a week before school ended. A rotten break.

I always let our children know that they could take a day off from school if they wanted to. They were high achievers and never wanted to take me up on the offer.

I think it's human nature to rebel when someone is standing over you with a stick.
