Archy, I hope you didn't get my earlier post wrong--I suspect Truscott is on target with his observations--my comments were directed at another poster who took an unsupported swipe at our junior officers fighting in Iraq. I realize that. And I'm not surprised you've partied with him either; should the chance come up again, casually drop in the mention that you've got a pal who plays a nice banjo version of *Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.... and see what kind of result you get.
IMHO, he's probably about as knowledgable a reporter on what's going on as Charlie Black from the Columbus Enquirer was. Not quite an Ernie Pyle or Cathy Leroy, but close.

Watch out for this Truscott dude. He wrote the odious, anti-military, anti-West Point book, Dress Gray. He is not to be trusted.

Nearly every LT in the 101st and in the 2/2 Cav (where I was last week) is a West Pointer,
How come all the LTs are Pointing West? Dont some point point in other directions?

No matter what you may have heard about the effectness or lethality of our various military equipment- tanks, artillery, nuclear weapons- I can assure you that there is probably nothing else as dangerous and potentially lethal as a second lieutenant with a compass trying to figure out which direction is which, or even which way is up. One that points in the same direction all or most of the time is a considerable cut above most of them, who sometimes resemble windmills as they first point this way, then that, then some other.

If he doesn't quite dissect things as interestingly as WEB Griffin/Bill Butterworth, he knew West Point firsthand and the spears he tossed its way seem to have not only stuck pretty good, but also landed in places that caused some particular yelps from his targets. I'm just glad he didn't pick on Norwich.

My husband and son are both West Point grads and I spent a lot of time at West Point while my husband was a cadet. It was closer to the time frame that Truscott wrote about and although he got the logistics right he was clueless about the Long Gray Line. I wasn't that interested in the army at the time because I was homesick and wanted my husband to get out. (he didn't) But, the point is, Truscott's book even insulted me.

You are correct. My brother was in ROTC at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois and prior to that was in the Illinois National Guard. Of course, I have never personally seen him at work but he is doing the job he has always wanted to do from when he was a child. He always has received high praise from his CO. He loves the Army!!!!

Just another day at the office...

Watch out for this Truscott dude. He wrote the odious, anti-military, anti-West Point book, Dress Gray. He is not to be trusted. No personal experience with the guy, but Gen. Vincent Brooks had unkind words for him when I was his RTO back in 83. Don't think he knew him personally (Brooks was class of '79) but apparently his reputation at WP was not good.
for what it's worth.

It helps knowing he is there and that there are people who support what he and the other soldiers are doing. And there are a lot more of us who support it than the media or vermin like Hillary want the troops or the general populace to know.
God bless 'em all over there.

Forget about what the folks from his class say about him. If I was judged today for what I did and said 25 years ago, I would be lynched! The fact is, he is at least reporting the mud soldier's war, and is not "reporting" from the bar of the Pali Hotel like the rest of the media whores.
