[history]
Three Maryland researchers have admitted fabricating interviews with teenagers for a study on AIDS prevention that received more than $1 million in federal funds.
Lajuane Woodard, Sheila Blackwell and Khalilah Creek were employed by the University of Maryland at Baltimore's department of pediatrics as researchers on the study, funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Oversight without consequence is a waste of time and even more money. We need NOAA, NASA or NIH to pull the grants and start blacklisting schools that have chronic issues with ethics. If they lie, cheat and steal, they don't get federal research funds.

Oversight without consequence is a waste of time and even more money. I completely agree. I asked the question as there are folks I respect who don't believe it's a good idea, but when fraud happens we need some sort of accountability. For fraud, as someone hinted at, perhaps it should be required that the money is repaid, no further research funds are granted and perhaps charges are levied.

Accountability, ironically, has become sort of a weasel word. I'm amazed at how many accountable people never seem to have anything bad happen to them after egregious misdeeds.
What we really need is f----- feudal punishment. Bad consequences should dwell in synonymy with bad actions. If the dog craps on the rug, rub Fido's nose in it.

"The modern American University is a corrupt and amoral joke."
Because of a few AIDs studies? Please.. Reserve judgement until you consider the immense amount of good born of the efforts of university researchers. I am one myself.
