A school district in Maine is considering banning the distribution of Boy Scouts fliers to student after one parent complained about the material due to the organization's policy against homosexuals.

David Hilton, whose 6-year-old son started school this fall in Portland, Maine, says allowing the Boy Scouts to distribute fliers gives the impression the school district endorses a discriminatory organization, reports the Portland Press Herald.

"Young gay and lesbian persons growing up in America ... have a high rate of depression," Hilton told the paper. "To start in elementary school hearing this unwritten message that it's not OK to be gay, well, that's really upsetting."

After Hilton complained to the Portland School Committee, the panel put the issue on its agenda for last Wednesday's meeting. The Associated Press reported the committee made no decision about the fliers at the meeting, but instead called for more information from school principals and administrators before taking a vote.

School Committee Chairman Jonathan Radtke told the Portland paper if school officials ban Boy Scout notices, they will be legally required to ban notices from all other groups.

"We have to have a policy that says everything goes out or nothing goes out," he said, according to the report.

At least one city council member supports Hilton's efforts, saying the fliers contradict the gay-rights ordinance that Portland voters approved in 1992.

One possible option is for a disclaimer to accompany the fliers from the Boy Scouts to make it clear the school district doesn't endorse the group's policies.

School Committee member James DiMillo, a Boy Scouts supporter, told the paper committee members want to add a disclaimer just to make themselves feel better.

"My problem with the whole thing is, why change it when we only have one complaint?" he said.

I found a flier in my driveway in Paulding County, Ga. My friend and neighbor was black. My friend up the street is black. He busts criminals when they run. If you are ever in Atlanta and you have an outstanding warrant, you just might meet Jerrel. You don't want to.

I am so sorry. The flier was from the KKK. When I read it back it looked okay, but I missed the salient point.

Now that's laughable! Elementary school?

Think maybe the depression they [teachers, administrators, and fathers, not the students] suffer may be caused, in part by their lifestyle?

Note to "father" : homosexuality is not okay.

Boy Scout Oath or Promise

On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

These are exactly those things every parent should want their child to strive for. Unless, of course, you happen to be morally bankrupt.
