A new report says Social Security reform (search) envisioned by President Bush in his 2000 presidential campaign can work, leaving supporters encouraged that proposed measures that lost popularity following tough economic times and tougher critics could re-emerge as an issue in 2004.

How many billions of dollars will we have to pay for this "reform"? I wish the government would give me a few "reforms".

I don't think that the Republicans plan to pursue this until after the election, when they hope to have stronger control in the Senate. The issue is too controversial and gives the Democrats a campaign issue that they so desparately seek.
I do think that the medicare-drug give away to seniors was in preparation for the social security over-haul, however. The additional give-away places an even greater burden on younger workers and will make them more receptive to the idea of total social security reform.

I hope Social Security reform won't be as expensive as Medicare reform. I'd like to have a little money left over at the end of every month for my family.

that would allow taxpayers to contribute 5 to 10 percent of their contributions Soulds like a good idea. But let's call Social Security "contributions" what they really are- TAXES!

I hope when the time comes, the GOP and PresBush don't reform Social Security like they recently reformed Medicare. We don't need another boondoggle. We need serious reform.

The kinds of investments that are envisioned in the Social Security private investment accounts are really very conservative investments, not playing the market, but pretty safe investments that are virtually guaranteed to go up over a period of time," said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. What happens if the "virtually guaranteed" investments don't go up over a period of time? Is the government going to guarantee that the investments will go up?

Bush could do something really important if he took the first steps towards totally privatizing this Ponzi scheme on the way to abolishing it.

The true light to consider Mediscare reform under. Maybe. But we have to save 400 billion just to break even, thanks to a bill that no one even wanted. I hope it all works out.
