SACRAMENTO -- Starting next month, the nation's first genetically altered household pet -- a fish -- will start appearing in stores -- except in California.
The "GloFish" is altered to glow in the dark, but environmental and public interest groups call it "Frankenfish."
They oppose an exemption to the state's ban on lab-engineered species that the state Fish and Game Commission will take up Wednesday
State wildlife officials say the Florida-grown Zebra fish poses no danger. Officials say the fish, which scientists turned green or red by inserting genes from other species, are less tolerant of cold water and would probably die if they escaped.
Some environmentalists fear some might survive and establish themselves. They also fear the GloFish could open the door to other genetically engineered species.

It would be pretty cool to see schools of these things at night, but they'd be quickly eaten by other fish. Which I'm sure the enviros don't understand because they've never been fishing.

leave your hallucinogen abuse out of this!shucks....what's the point of abusing hallucinogens if I can't enhance my posting experience? (snicker, snicker)
btw....this 'frankenfish' would make a good Simpsons episode....much like the 3-eyed fish did a few years ago.

Zebra fish, glowing or not, could never survive in California rivers. This ban is stupidity squared.

Sounds like something that would make great fishbait. Kind of like using goldfish for bass.

"Some environmentalists fear some might survive and establish themselves."
So are they afraid that no one will be able to sleep by the brightly lit rivers and streams, or the moon will not shimmer on the surface of the incandescent ocean any more?

brightly lit rivers and streams, well, this is Kalifornia.....maybe they're afraid they won't be able to regulate it efficiently....thereby causing conflict with power companies and solar-powered endeavors...and, ultimately, miss out on being able to tax it heavily?
