The Texas A&M football team has just finished a dreadful season, going 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the Big 12 conference, including a 77-0 humiliation at the University of Oklahoma. Texas A&M's athletic director, Bill Byrne, has a novel theory as to why his school is suffering athletically. He blames the Young Conservatives of Texas A&M, a student group, which held one of those "affirmative action bake sales":
"Free speech is not an issue for me, and differing political beliefs are not an issue for me, because I believe that reasonable people can disagree. But I'm disappointed over the national attention that Texas A&M University received recently because of a few individuals and their idea of a protest.
The Texas A&M Bake Sale plays right into the hands of those who recruit against us, in both athletics and in the general student population. They will use something like this to suggest that Texas A&M does not have a welcoming environment.
We all know that is not true. Unfortunately, a few individuals represented 45,000 students and an entire community in precisely the wrong light. My hope is that those of you who have a chance to influence public opinion will speak out against anything like this that discredits Texas A&M University. It causes me to redouble my efforts to do exactly that."

The team didn't lose because of the young conservatives having a bake sale. They lost because of the jerks over at the Library who chose to give a humanitarian award to Ted Kennedy!

So are the Horns headed to the BCS this year, kind of a strange deal having to root for Oklahoma this weekend to prevent K-State from upsetting the apple cart..

So are the Horns headed to the BCS this year, kind of a strange deal having to root for Oklahoma this weekend to prevent K-State from upsetting the apple cart.. We'll probably have our a$$es handed to us by Oklahoma and miss a good bowl bid, but hey....we're still having a pretty damned good year.
Not a bad runner-up prize:

Out here in this part of the Country -- football is #1 -- we have more sports radio stations then we have talk radio stations -- there is a priority out here in Big 12 Country -- Football is king! All of our States (except for Iowa) also vote Conservative -- even among the Dems liberals are hard to find which makes this article so hilarious. Blaming conservatives for A&M losing! I am going to be laughing about that for a long time!
I have kept quiet for several weeks but this article put me over the top. That game was unbelieveable -- never witnessed anything like it -- A&M team quitting halfway through the 2nd quarter -- not the A&M teams I have known in the past. When we played in Alabama, they wanted the Sooner fans to yell Roll Tide when Fran came out! Alabama must have loved this game!
Edwards showed up at this game to pass out his info -- no one was wearing any of his name tags that I saw and he complained afterward that the Sooner fans didn't seem to be into politics -- moron! This was football Saturday in Norman -- only Republican politics and that mixes. We don't have trouble in the Fall passing out Republican tags to wear -- they used to put J.C.'s stick-on decals all over with no problem.

I was there with my son and daughter and two of my son's fraternity brothers -- the three guys were yelling to go for a 100 -- everyone around us after those two guys strutted around wanted a 100! It was bizarre! I cannot believe my voice became hoarse at a game that was that lopsided but it did. Too much yelling!
Did not realize that the A&M campus had become PC! I cannot wait to show my son this article! Going to be going all over this campus!

Don't think a lot of the Country understands what Friday nights (high school) and Saturdays (college) are like in Big 12 Country -- everything else takes a backseat to football! I love living in this part of the Country!

Larry Merchant..the sportswriter and TV acommentator..years ago was a sports columnist for the NY Post..the wrote a book 20 years ago called the "National Football lottery"..about the betting on pro-football..but it's the introductory chapters which are a hoot..he grew up in the Bronx, was all city in football, and accepted a scholarship to OU because he wanted to play for Bud..he'd never been out of NYC till then, and he describes the culture shock...well worth the read, if you can ever find it for a buck in a used-book sale..

LOL!!! Roy Williams was quoted in the paper here in Norman as saying this week he is rooting for the Sooners -- we would be doing the same for the Longhorns if the situation was reversed. I was rooting for the Longhorns against Fran and A&M last Saturday too!

Funny, that would actually provide much more square footage than any dorm or apartments. Would cost more as well...

Is that why the Sooner fans gave the horns down sign all throughout the Aggie and Tech games?

Just why should A&M have kept Slocum? His recruiting had declined in quality and his offensive coordinators never matched up to top level programs around the country. While A&M won SWC championships in '91, '92, and '93 under Slocum, they lost all three corresponding Cotton Bowl appearances. Only one of those games was competitive, the '94 Cotton Bowl against Notre Dame which ND won 24-21. In the others A&M failed to score a touchdown. Actually during the '90 - '93 Cotton Bowls none of the SWC teams scored a single touchdown. I think that was indicitive of they declining quality of competition in the SWC in its final years. A&M even came close to going undefeated against all SWC competition for four years '92-'95 (lost the final SWC game ever played to Texas in 1995), but won only one one bowl game in that period (the Alamo Bowl in 1995 against Michigan). While A&M played well at home they have often done poorly on the road against ranked teams. I really don't think Slocum was the coach capable of making A&M competitive in the second decade of the Big 12. It also wasn't a secret that Slocum was in the hot seat. There was an article in Texas Monthly prior to the 2001 season about the unhappiness of Aggies with the direction of the performance of his teams. That was about 16 months prior to his firing.
What was so bad about the hiring of Franchione? Alabama was under NCAA sanctions and was about to be hit with more investigations for infractions that ocurred prior to the time when Franchione arrived in Alabama. Why should Franchione have had to suffer with sanctions generated by his predecessor? Considering how Alabama hired Bear Bryant during the middle of the 1957 season, turnabout is fair play. A&M was undefeated late in the 1957 and in a position to win a national championship when the rumors about Bryant leaving A&M for the head coaching job at Alabama started. After the rumors broke out, A&M lost crucial games against Rice and Texas.
