President Reagan's Accomplishments (Help Needed)
11-29-03 | my favorite headache

Posted on 11/29/2003 2:49:22 PM PST by My Favorite Headache

I am doing an article on the accomplishments of President Reagan for my paper. Now it would be very easy to do research on the usual items of historical importance that he was part of, but I want a solid more personal fact filled article from Republican and former Democrats.

This is obviously the best place to ask this question.

List some of your top Reagan achievements on this thread. When the article is finished and linked...I will post it here on FR.

Thanks

MFH

He changed the nature of the debate.
For 50 years, the question had been,"what is the best way for government to solve whatever problem?"
With Reagan, the debate became, "Should government be involved in addressing whatever problem?"
That was a huge difference and a great accomplishment.

Sadly, under GWB, the question has returned to that before Reagan.

Reagan's accomplishments are legion, and continue to influence policy to this day. Among his greatest:

-Reducing the top marginal tax rate from 70% to 28%, which caused unprecedented growth in the GDP and doubled revenue to the federal government.

-Appointing strict constitutionalist Antonin Scalia to the Supreme Court.

-Winning the Cold War by confronting and undermining Soviet influence whereever it was found.

One sentence:

Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

Reagan focused the US on the cold war and put it in moral terms. A little known quote from a Soviet Defense Minister (Havent heard that phrase in a while) pointed out that the moment that the Communists began to lose the cold war was when Reagan called them the evil empire. Nobody had ever highlighted what their system of oppression was. We still don't fully understand the evil that communist tolitarianism was.

"I paid for this microphone," one of his famous quips that irritated Marxists in the presidential campaign.

"We start dropping bombs in 30 minutes," another famous quip that drove the media Marxists up the wall.

Jelly beans. Don't forget the jelly beans...

List some of your top Reagan achievements on this thread.

This administration forcast budget deficits of 150 billion for fiscal years '82, '84 and '85. The largets deficit in the nation's history to that point was 66 billion.

This administration twisted the arms of congress to raise the ceiling on the national debt.

In August of 1982 this administration used all the muscle it could muster to get Congress to pass the largest tax increase in the nation's history - $227 billion over 5 years.

Bringing God back into the nat'l debate. Removing any stigma to being a proud patriotic American Assuring and convincing the majority of people, in this country & around the world, of the superiority & fairness of supply-side economics to any other system. Showing the entire world the true nature of communism. Teaching us to always believe that "There's got to be a pony in here somewhere!"

When he took office, the country was still reeling from Viet Nam, civil rights riots, watergate, and inflation. Our country had lost the optimism and belief in ourselves. Reagan renewed the American spirit.

There is no question, for me, he made me proud to be an American again.

Quite frankly, kind of like what GWB is doing for us now.

Lowing the top marginal rates form the communitst 70% to a more reasonable 25% was the most significant factor leading to the 18 years of economic growth that followed.

The reason it became a tax increase was because it lead to growth and people no longer had to hide their income to keep it. People could claim taxable income without fear of losing it all.

I'll give you something from a personal level. I bought my first house in September of 1980, and felt lucky to get a mortgage of 12.5%. News of the time cautioned that mortgage rates would never again dip to single digits. We were told to abandon the American dream of home ownership. Reagan returned dreams to Americans.
