Bumping all this for later.

One quick point though, the author seem to ignore entirely a very important point in all human affairs "the rule of law".

It is my impression that many, if not most, if not all, of the so-called third world countries are deeply corrupt. If the law is not enforced fairly, if bribes must always be paid, in the law is inefficient to the point of nullity, of course no progress can be made. It is not all "democracy", "markets", and "socialism". It is also the need for blind justice.

Read more later. Sorry about her aunt.

The very demagoguish forces which make the more successful groups the scapegoats for the disatisfaction of the less successful, totally ignore what you refer to as "the rule of law." But one does not need to look to the Third World to see examples of that.

Did the forces of the Left in America, in the 20th Century, allow the fixed principles of the Constitution--our fundamental "Rule of Law," to restrain any of their projects aimed at forcing egalitarian values down the throats of the rest of us? Did Bill Clinton let the "Rule of Law" restrain him from misusing his position as Commander In Chief, to advance his pet Social Theories both at home and abroad?

Different peoples will interpret the concept of the "Rule of Law," in different ways. Different peoples will give their own interpretations of the concept, differing levels of priority in respect to other values. No matter how you slice it, Democracy does not work as it does in a country like Switzerland (where you have a high level of homogeneity and a largely middle class population, with kindred values) in most of the rest of the world, where you have multi-ethnic, multi-cultural communities, with many uneducated and impoverished people--many without the aptitudes to ever succeed in a modern economy.
