Hospital warns migrants to pay up: Says failure could mean deportation

TUCSON - Uninsured immigrants who fail to pay their medical bills are being reported to immigration officials and warned that they could face deportation under a new University Medical Center policy.

This month, hospital workers started calling the federal bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to turn in "foreign nationals" with delinquent accounts, said Barbara Felix, UMC's international patient service's coordinator. The policy, affecting legal and undocumented immigrants, reflects the growing frustration of hospital administrators along the U.S.-Mexican border saddled with millions of dollars in uncompensated care. UMC alone has incurred $3.3 million in unpaid bills from immigrants since July.

I can admit to a posted error,

One error admitted to, but then you go on to make another glaring error:

As for your comments, they define yourself well. DU mentality at best

Being as I have been a very active participant of FR since mid-1999, and being as I authored the Free Republic Inaugural Ball's opening presentation, and being as I have worked tirelessly for FR's goals, I can hardly be called a Democrat Underground champion.

A criticism of autoresponder does not define liberalism, and the sooner you get over that little belief, the less incoherent you will appear to be.

Appear to be.

Here's a question...If I go to a Mexican hospital, do I have to pay?

No, because you will probably die!!!

Per some LEO contacts they are back that day or the next day

Great idea, does not work in practice

I am not advocating vigilante actions; many victims of rape, murder, cattle theft, etc. on USA borders are native born ranchers here hundreds of years of Spanish descent; they are fed up and handcuffed by feds and states and courts and

ACLU, NAACP, etc.!

Both parties at the top are guilty of pandering to Fox, Mexico, business, agricultural interests.

All races and ethnicities in the USA seem to poll very heavily against illegal aliens and government giveaways of our freedoms, liberties, tax dollars.

I have seen polls in the mid 60%-70%s

Media is against us, as usual.

UN and Kofi Anan (spg?) are for open borders, vibrant economies paying blackmail to stone age lazy nations

As you said, this becoming the big issue; even many dem/libs are for action to get polls of 60%-70%

My NYC lib sister is very anti-illegal alien, as are all of her lib friends

I shop at a local (legal) Mexican grocery and a local (legal) Indian covenience store and a local (legal) Korean deli

All great, clean, honest, friendly, tax-paying businesses

I do not have a viable solution that will be implemented

Our courts and pols give away our heritage and kid's futures to criminal illegal aliens and their home countries

I propose reciprical immigration and INS statutes

No medical, welfare, firearms in Mexico for US citizens, none her in the US for illegal aliens

Give them Mexican jails and courts here

Never happen

ACLU and NAACP folks may face some uncertain futures soon

I'll cry for them

Our hospital just instituted Point-of-Service payment collections. Your insurance is verified, and you pay your co-pay before going in to see the ER doctor, or going back to the lab, or whatever.

If you have no insurance, you fill out an application for State (AZ) Assistance. If they deny you, you are put on "Cash-Apply", which means you will be billed after paying a certain amount up front. There's your loop-hole, the indigent patient gives a phony address, gets treatment, and is never heard from again.

If you are being seen for a non-emergency treatment, such as a pregnancy or surgery, you pay up-front. That can be all co-pays plus insurance, or it can be cash.

I know firsthand that it's nothing for the local hospital cash office to receive up to $35,000 from patients who are preparing to receive treatment.

Your posted descriptive comments define you

I did not

Your previous FR history or Conservative beliefs are not well served by your loose careless tongue

Some find it necessary to enhance their posted comments with colorful words to others on FR

You obviously do; a practice seen on DU on every thread

You are what you are and say

No more comments on that from me

Y'know, I love a freakin' bonehead that comes on the forum, slings an outrageous factoid, can't back it up when challenged, and all of a sudden it's MY fault.

Man, if anyone is acting like a leg-warmer-wearing liberal wussy-boy, I'd have to say it's YOU, pally.

Good discussions here. A coupla key factors missing in the discussion. A federal court case says that -- even though the law says only emergency care for life-threating illness or injury must be provided -- basic health care must be provided regardless of ability to pay.

OTOH, an Arizona judge says emergency care only.

"Won't work for you - you're an American"

That is very true. I personally know an American living in Arizona who needed surgery and the doctor told her that if she had been an illegal she could have had the operation right away. But, as an American w/o insurance she had to save & borrow from family which took several months. Fortunately, this was not a life-threatening surgery (a goiter).

Courts, pols, bureaucrats, ACLU, NAACP, trade unions; all for open borders, "psuedo-documentation" of *"undocumented citizens" (?????)

Yes, *"undocumented citizens"!

I heard that *new little gem from a hispanic women activist group attorney/shyster bent on stealing your paycheck folks.

On WABC 770am NYC.

I think on Sean Hannity's show.

(CAUTION: I bash Sean for recruiting illegal aliens for his painting and home construction biz years back, "rationalizing" it by saying his parents were poor Irish {BUT LEGAL!} American immigrants and that Mexicans are "poor"; so are most people in India!!!!!)

I wish I had quick legal solution to this; the corrupt lib federal judges are really the problem now.

Impeaching and convicting and removing them is impossible; trying to think of the Florida federal judge who was for election fraud (???) and was elected to the US House of Representatives!

Sean has him on his show and H&C often.

Never convicted of a felony, still votes, in US Congress, never served one day in jail.

I hate use Laura Ingraham's "elite" label, but there it is.

I prefer "deletes", but that is just me; I hardly consider them to be high IQ persons; rather just corrupt attorneys with an occasional fruitcake physician tossed in.

We need to watch Arnold in Cali-Forn-Ya; we need to see how he handles DMV licenses for illegal aliens, foreign workers here, etc.

Liberal policies will chase out more honest America taxpayers and businesses, Conservatives or libs.

Arnold knows that, but CA corporations and agricultural interests will be all over him.

I may be wrong, but I believe I heard here on FR that Vermont is 97% white population.

Cannot be many illegal aliens there, but they manage to find willing workers to harvest crops, work in dairies, meat packing houses, etc.

Why will Americans in Vermont do such low-down dirty work?

Huh?

I know; it does not count in a tiny state.

Or something

(see, it is really possible to post on FR without using childish lanquage because you are annoyed!)

It would be MY policy to have them discharged into the custody of INS... I wouldn't be just letting them go out the door by themselves - whether they pay or not.

Then, all the illegals would avoid my hospital...

I said my stat could be in error; subsequent stats posted indicate so.

I do not and will not "enhance" my comments directed at others on FR.

Some do.

Most do not.

Frankly, I don't care.

I managed to dispatch primates without bothering to add childish words as I did.

Many primates.

Quickly.

I did not and do not dispute your Conservatism or time on FR.

I did not state that my error might be or was your fault.

Your words are your words.

This is a waste of time.

Pssst... just because someone asks you for sources regarding a statistic doesn't mean you need to have a tantrum. It happens, ya know? No offense intended or anything, but if you use unsourced statistics there is a 94.3 percent* chance someone will call you on it - that's what FReepers do ;0)

I read an interesting article recently that said Mexican authorities were encouraging Mexican patients with serious health problems that require high tech at enormous costs to cross the border and get care from US hospitals.

That wouldn't surprise me. The European ruling class in Mexico has been trying to get rid of their darker-skinned native population for decades, and the more modern "humane" policy has been to encourage and support them coming to the United States...

Not completely. For example, here's a picture of a bunny with cellophane on it's head.
