Chris, everyone here better figure this out: Rice is (so far) NOT a politician. She has not run for office; not gotten a single vote in a single eleciton; not raised a penny. Barring a phenomenal next four years, she will not be material for a presidential candidate. Maybe Veep, but even then, she brings no voter appeal/sectional appeal to the table. I'm sorry, but we all have to realize that there are QUALIFICATIONS to running for office, and as distasteful as they may be, they involve the ability to run an organization; appoint people; and RAISE MONEY.

I'm glad you told me this, GSC. Thanks. I could not understand how anyone as bright as Oprah could fail to appreciate, respect, and admire Condoleezza Rice.

I think I misunderstood the situation, and, frankly, I'm glad I did. I admire and respect both of them.

She did both at Stanford. Same thing on a much smaller scale. As head of the NSC and as Stanford provost, she easily met both your first and second qualifications. At Stanford, she not only raised money, she brought Stanford's budget into the black.

She's executive material, and she's as telegenic as the day is long.

And she's from California. Now unless you want to tell me what a bangup candidate Bill Frist or Santorum would make going up against the Hildebeast, I suggest you give Condi a second look.

Trust me---I am in academics---running a University in no way is the same as being in mainstream politics, where you have to build a support base from among big-time political machines. The first thing Bush did, long after being governor of one of the largest states in the Union, was build a network of all the other governors. Bush spent the better part of two years cultivating this network, and even then, it can be argued, it didn't help him all that much.

Rice has absolutely no experience at that context. All you have to do to see this in action is to look at the MUCH more qualified Ken Blackwell here in OH and see how the Taft machine basically squeezed him out when he easily could have run four years ago.

Further, to throw up Frist or Santorum as "lock-in" alternatives ignores the more likely possibility that any one of several GOP governors might make a run at things, or to ignore Rudy Guliani. Rice's lack of a "vote casting record," in any elected capacity, hurts further (see Wesley Clark in this regard). Despite his inconsistencies, Howard Dean actually has a record of "accomplishments" that he can point to. In short, I think it is fantasy for conservatives to continue to pine for Condi as presidential material. POSSIBLY as VP, and even then, it is shaky.

Believe me, they are friends, She may have appeared that way to you because she did not want to appear closer to Condi Rice than she really is. Remember the photo of her and Condi and Gail at the White House and the boob joke?

I was glad to hear what you said because I admire both of them very highly. I could not understand how Oprah could not admire C. Rice, considering how intelligent and accomplished both are. I obviously had a misperception, and what you said makes sense; however, it is still difficult to understand why Oprah falls all over movie stars, praising them lavishly--Tom Cruise comes to mind, not that I have anything against him; I don't--but is not lavish in her praise of someone truly remarkable like Condoleeza Rice.
