Southwestern Pennsylvania may be short of some things -- young people, sunny days -- but in one category it's in a class of its own: Local government. Allegheny County alone has 130 municipalities, and this abundance of officialdom has led to calls for a more rational consolidation of government units.

Conservative opponents of Big Government should find this very chilling.
Whereas libertarian or anarchist opponents of big government--or government in general--should regard this as simply what it is, a school to train administrators in the public sector. Whether you want more government or less, you certainly want public employees to be effective stewards of public properties and revenues.

Alleghany County residents just need to be more sensitive and enlightened about the virtues of consolidation. Why, just look at what it's done for Philadelphia County.

I have repeatedly said that the smaller the government, the better. But I think the idea of training newly elected and appointed members of government is a very good one.
I would be especially good with school boards--how to fire perverted teachers, move to a voucher system, help home schoolers, etc.
