Mel Gibson's upcoming movie "The Passion of the Christ" – has come under fierce criticism.

The movie depicts the last hours of Jesus' life and his crucifixion.

Critics say the film is too real and shows the brutality of the death. Other critics say because the film too closely mirrors the Gospel accounts, it is anti-Semitic.

Some Jewish leaders have stated Mel Gibson is an anti-Semite. Others say the film should not be shown in movie theatres. Efforts are underway to block the movie's distribution to the public.

My problem is that the portrayal may not be all that accurate.

Actually, if they were really going to crucify an otherwise healthy person that hadn't been tortured half to death before the crucifixion, the movie would take a couple of days from start to finish.

It's an especially evil way to kill someone.

When I was a kid taking western history classes, I used to think if I just concentrated hard enough, I could make the Roman Empire last longer that 476 Anno Domini. Sometime around the age of 30, I came to realize how truly evil the Roman Empire really was...starting at least with the Saddam of his day, Julius Caesar. Crucifixion was just one manifestation.

If I could retake those history classes knowing what I know today, I'd have pulled for the barbarians.

I would think a distributor that wants the bottom line to get healthy in a minute would fight hard to get distribution rights.

As a Jew, I am not all that partial to the Romans. (One minute you are allies, the next you are laid waste.)
As a member of western civilization, I am happy that their empire lasted as long as it did.
