Net immigration to the United States rose dramatically by 1.4 million in each of the past two years, about half a million of whom were listed as illegal aliens, a report said yesterday.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) said if the numbers remain unchanged, this decade will mark the most massive wave of immigration in American history, with 45 million immigrants

Your enemy is socialism, not immigration.
Absolutely not, and it's apples and oranges anyway. The US like every other country in the world has a right to control its borders and regulate who comes in and out of it.
Freedom of movement by the citizens within the country is a whole other ballgame.
Correction on my part: the US has a right to regulate who comes in, Americans like everyone else are free to leave anytime they wish.
And for what purpose do they control seek to control these borders? Why is a North Korean or East German border what seem people prefer for the U.S.? Fences work both ways, you know...
Freedom of movement by the citizens within the country is a whole other ballgame.
The lines being crossed are imaginary in both instances. If the Governor of New York declared he wasn't accepting immigrants from Mississippi or Alabama, and needed to put a tax on goods from those areas in the name of preserving jobs (creating goods that are made cheaper in MS or AL), would it be a good idea? Why or why not?
You and me both. I'm about to give up and become a full-time BeerSwillr. It might make things a bit more bearable. :)
The question has no basis to begin with because states cannot set up their own immigration policies, that is left to Congress. Technically I would imagine Congress would have the right to control people's movement between states, but that is not politically realistic or feasible.
And for what purpose do they control seek to control these borders?
There's a thousand answers to this question including the need for population control and the welfare state which will never be repealed, but the one that comes to mind more than anything is national security. There are bad people out there who don't like us and do not need importing.
You're dodging. I didn't ask if it was popular or even feasible (locking down the U.S. like East Berlin isn't feasible either). Just whether or not it's a good idea to restrict immigration from low income states with low unemployment to high income states with higher unemployment. So what do you think, good idea, or not?

Population control? You think the government should regulate how many babies people have? You're starting to sound like a statist, not a Reaganite. Who are the busybody bureaucrats that know how much population the U.S. 'should' have at any given time?
and the welfare state which will never be repealed,
Ah, finally we hit upon the real enemy. Stay focused on socialism, not immigration, because it's the real enemy. The welfare state isn't eternal, it's self defeating.
the one that comes to mind more than anything is national security. There are bad people out there who don't like us and do not need importing.
They can walk from Afghanistan to Pakistan, but a trek through the Canadian woods or the Mexican desert is too tough? If you think the U.S. federal government, or any other entity, can 'secure' the borders you've been duped.
The Constitution of the United States protects American citizens only from government tyranny, not everyone else in the world. Of course people in the country are free to procreate to their hearts content, and as was mentioned in a previous post immigration policy should proceed from there.
In the eyes of most of us, it is not desirable for the government to purposely grow the country to half a billion or more. If anyone is being statist, it is the politicians and bureaucrats who are forcing this policy on us against our will.
If you think the U.S. federal government, or any other entity, can 'secure' the borders you've been duped.
No I'm not being duped, I grew up in a can-do country. We are capable of doing a heck of a lot better job of securing these borders than we are now. A little interior enforcement alone would send a signal to would be illegals around the world their presence is not wanted.
The problem is that many recent immigrants are "yearning to eat, be housed, be schooled, be transported, be doctored free" instead of "yearning to breathe free".
Hence, the enemy is socialism, not immigration.
Are politicians forcing people to move here? Or is it that individuals have within themselves, as our forebears did, a desire to share in the opportunities of liberty?
No I'm not being duped, I grew up in a can-do country. We are capable of doing a heck of a lot better job of securing these borders than we are now.
Sir, if you think the government can prevent people from crossing thousands of miles of borders you have been duped. Government isn't that capable. Sorry.
A little interior enforcement alone would send a signal to would be illegals around the world their presence is not wanted.
How many hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of immigrants would have to be rounded up for folks to think they have bad odds (of getting caught) when millions are coming in? Do you think the guy in Honduras is going to hear about the raid on Walmart night moppers? Do you think he's watching Ted Koppel?
From 1925-1965 we had a lull in mass immigration to allow for those new to the country to assimilate, and it worked wonderfully. After 35 years and 35 million new immigrants, it's time for another one.
Sir, if you think the government can prevent people from crossing thousands of miles of borders you have been duped. Government isn't that capable. Sorry.
Don't ask me, talk to border patrol and INS agents, they all say if the government would give them the resources and let do their jobs they could slow illegal immigration to a trickle. Not stop it completely, I agree that's probably not possible, but cut it drastically.
Gotta go, Happy Thanksgiving.
Sorry, but it can be done. Government just doesn't have the desire yet. They will change.
With todays technology, it makes it even easier to protect our borders and sovereignty. Besides, these millions are not crossing in the middle of nowhere. Even illegals are not that stupid. They generally cross in known areas, near the border cities.
It would be relatively easy to put a stop to this government approved invasion.
As the anger and concern steadily builds among the American people, it will change, bet the rent.
This crisis now extends far beyond the borders of Texas, Cal, Arizona, etc. The rest of the country is now getting a taste of this never ending flood of people that enter illegally.....
I stated in the late 1980s that this invasion of millions would eventually become the largest, most dangerous crises facing this nation, and it's coming true. The anger grows along with the number of people that suddenly appear. It's a time bomb, and it will eventually go off.
