Don't look now, Howard Dean, but Bill and Hillary Clinton are leaving the Democratic Party - and they're taking the party's campaign cash with them. So says Dick Morris, the longtime Clinton advisor who masterminded Mr. Clinton's presidential reelection victory in 1996.
"Dean seems destined to win the nomination and with it control of the party," Morris writes in today's New York Post. "So the Clintons are moving out."
Morris sees the creation of alternative fundraising operations like Americans Coming Together as a bid by the Clintons to protect their assets while the Vermont liberal leads the official party to electoral disaster next November.
Noting that Bill and Hillary have recruited fundraising scandal veteran Harold Ickes to find ways of camouflaging otherwise illegal million dollar donations from the likes of party fatcats George Soros and Peter Lewis, Morris contends:
"Ickes is about as independent of Hillary as Bill is. He is her chief advisor. His photo graces her memoirs. He was her key operative in securing the Senate seat in New York. To pretend that anything he would do is independent of Hillary is like saying that the left hand is independent of the right hand."
The one-time White House political guru says that the former first couple view the Dean juggernaut "with alarm" - and that Ickes' job is to "circumvent the Democratic Party and establish a lifeboat in the form of Americans Coming Together."
Mr. Ickes himself added fuel to rumors of a Clinton-Dean split when he told Time magazine last week that he thought the ex-Vermont Governor was too "quick of lip, and quick of temper and stubborn."
Ickes also complained that "in another time" Dean's Confederate flag remarks "would have taken him down the drain."
Predicts Morris, "Dean, upon copping the [nomination], is likely to fire Terry McAuliffe and take control of the Democratic National Committee. No longer will its coffers be available to the Clintons to use as their private fund, channeling donations to candidates and causes they favor or that favor them."
But thanks to Ickes and Americans Coming Together, when Dean takes over he'll be the party's leader in name only - with the DNC a mere shell of its former self.
Meanwhile Bill and Hillary will retain the real power - control over the Soros-Lewis gazillions - and with it the ability to determine the Democratic Party's future for as far as the eye can see.

I hope this is true because it will lead to internal fight that would make the '68 convention look like a Partridge Family Concert.

What's Morris's batting average? About zilch. Has he gotten anything right?

I had predicted a year ago that the Democratic Party would splinter in 2004 over the war and "K Street versus the People" issues.
However, in fairness to Mr. Morris, I had foreseen the candidate of K Street capturing the nomination, and the Left walking out. It would appear today that the Left will capture the nomination, and the K Street interests will walk out.

Am I missing something, or is the author trying to imply that Americans Coming Together is going to be a third party created and led by Clinton? Dean will take the DNC, Clinton will form the ACT, and what's left of the Democrats will then jump to whichever ship they prefer?
Could we be so lucky? Probably not, but talk about wishful thinking! Morris is really grasping at straws these days.

Do I sense a third-party here with Hitlery as the nominee?
It would sure split the Dems vote and guarantee a Bush second term.

...it will lead to internal fight that would make the '68 convention look like a Partridge Family Concert. In my prediction last year about the Democratic Party splintering in 2004, I had mentioned that the parallel would be the 1968 Chicago convention, but with one critical exception:
The violence in Chicago was on the streets. The violence in Boston next year will be in the convention hall.

Gotta love it! The true believer democrats (Dean) versus the non-ideological power mad democrats. I'm not sure which is more dangerous. The true believers cold actually get things done (in the wrong direction), but the power mad have no ethics and create situations like Waco and Elian.

If Soros motivating goal in life is to defeat George Bush, why would he follow Bill Clinton to a non-party that has no candidate?
I dont think Soros will suddenly decide that his motivating goal in life is keeping Bill and Hillarys wallets fat.
If Morris really thought the Clintons could abscond with the Soros booty, he wouldnt be writing this article he would be stapling his apology to Hillary onto his updated resume.

Clinton running a party called Americans COMING Together. I can't take it! It's too much!

The Clinton's stashing of cash reminds me of Saddam's cash handling practices.
Following the money is like turning over rocks.

This was so predictable by the Clintons. It is not about the country, the people, or their own party. It is all about them. The power of their party has been decimated because of the Clintons. It was Nita Lowey's turn to be a NY senator, but she got squashed by Hillary. The evil of those two know no bounds.
