Perhaps you have to be subscribed to the other forums for it work, as others have complained of the same.

I don't think you have to subscribe to the forums.... I think they are already available to all.... The "My Forums" section isn't operative at this time....

I keep at least to windows open at all times: News/activism latest post and My Comments..... I just click back and forth between them..... People can open other forums and read/refresh them every few minutes....

I personally don't want a one page for all the latest post and have to wade through multiple general interest post.. religious post/ smokeybackroom post..etc. I can do that by keeping windows open and checking each when I get the urge.... I'll still get a ping from anyone of them if someone pings me from there.

There have been guidelines or suggested guidelines posted in the past offering suggestions of what should be posted to each forum...... Do you have a link to any of them?

I've looked and thought I did but can't find any of them. Maybe I'm dreaming.....

Well it's not one big page but you can open each forum you are interested in in a different window and click between windows every so often scrolling the latest post pages in each forum to see what's moving on the different forums.....

Not perfect but offers an option to nothing at all.

Half the time I am here I am using my WebTV which will not open new windows, and the other half on my computer with it's original small monitor which is little better.

Now, of course, you should not program to your lowest common denominator and perhaps what we (jellybean, Stop Legal Plunder, sweetliberty, etc.) are asking is tougher programming than appears on the surface, but the addition of an "ALL Forums Latest Posts" page would seem to be a simple opt-in addition.

The "Home Page" I am sent to upon opening my browser now is the "News/Activism" Latest Post page. I (and many others) "stick" there. It is FR and, hence, why you get the "junk threads" posted there.

By having posts show up on TWO places (the "Latest Posts" page of it's individual category AND the all encompassing "ALL Forums Latest Posts" page) you satisfy the complaints off BOTH parties without changing the current dynamics...just a simple (?) addition.

[To our webmaster experts] Are we wrong here?

Good question but I think the following offers an answer at this time........

That answer was in response to the following question.......

Thus at this stage it seems opening multiple windows or swithing between forums every so often is the only option...

Thus at this stage it seems opening multiple windows or switching between forums every so often is the only option...

If an "ALL Forums Latest Post" page would take anything more than coding (remember...I know nothing about programming) something like <Place 'reply' to News/Activism and All Forums>....

or take up more than a few hours of John's time....

or have ANY chance of messing up the servers....

I will shut up.

It will show up on the latest posts page, but no forum except news/activism pings the pager. So, for example, if I am working on my photo site, or searching google or whatever and have my pager open so I don't miss pings on FR, I will only get pinged to posts on News/Activism or FReepmail. It also pings to messages on the state board. It does NOT ping posts to you from any other forum.

Makes no difference. If you use the pager, it only pings the News/Activism forum.

You are correct...WebTV will only open one window at a time. However, I use the "Recent" key extensively and quite effectively to jump from one page to another, but that only goes so far. It will store only the last 12 pages visited. If there's a thread that I'm watching, but not commenting on, it can quickly get bumped off the recents page if I make a couple of comments to another thread. Then I have to search for it again. If it's on another forum, I have to go to that forum to find it. Not difficult to do, but seems an unnecessary step in what othterwise is a well set-up forum.

If the "ALL forum posts" option was available, I wouold choose that as my default starting page.

BTW, eddie, I'm impressed by the length of your responses. You always claimed you were a slow typist. I don't think that's the case anymore :)

Sorry, I don't.

I agree with your suggestion of keeping windows open for the latest posts in various forums. I don't think I'd want a Super Latest Posts page; I like the idea of separate forums separating the news from the fluff; just wish it were better enforced. I do understand that sometimes there is a fine line.

It would be nice if the pager worked across forums; I have missed posts to me in forums other than News/Activism for longer than I'd have liked.

In my opinion, (and I know some people will disagree), prayer threads, ongoing daily chat threads, Laci Peterson/Kobe Bryant/Michael Jackson threads and a few others would be better sent to chat -- I'd rather see just news of national and international import (and opinion columns about the same) in the News/Activism forum.

The proposed idea would not change any of the forums. You would click "News/Activism Latest Posts" and see nothing but the posts that had been directed to that forum.....just as it is now.

I, however, would click the "Super" option and see all replies in real time, regardless of what category (forum) they were originally placed.

just wish it were better enforced.

If a poster knew that his latest "brilliant" vanity could be viewed by all that had opted for the Super option, then the temptation to post it "where the action is" would be diminished.... and I would become a "net nanny" myself. ;o)

I don't use the pager so I wasn't aware that it didn't operate across forums..... Seems like a simple code thing as originally the 'new post to you' thing didn't work across forums either...

But if you are operating on the latest post page the 'new post to you' should be highlighted for all forums unless it is deactivated if you have the pinger on......

Heck this is getting too deep for an ol' country boy. But I agree the News/activism forum needs to be cleaned up some. The only way it will get done for the time being is for the moderators to enforce it by moving items to their proper forums... Some will be hacked but that's the way the cookie crumbles.....

That's fine. I thought this thread was sort of a poll of the members, and I was stating my preference.

If a poster knew that his latest "brilliant" vanity could be viewed by all that had opted for the Super option, then the temptation to post it "where the action is" would be diminished....

If the guidelines for the different forums were clear and consistently enforced, I don't think this would be a problem either. Right now there seems to be some question as to what belongs where, and, at least in my opinion, it's not consistent. Why, for instance, are some of the "daily threads" in chat, and others in news? Why are prayer threads not in religion? Why are some crevo threads in religion, and some in news/activism?

If the rules were clear and consistently enforced, we'd all know where to go for "hard news" and where to go for lighter, chattier stuff, and could make our choices. Probably have fewer of the "You posted an entire thread just to ask/say this???" type responses, too.

No, it's not, but it's also highlighted every time you post something yourself - as someone pointed out earlier, that's unnecessary.

But I agree the News/activism forum needs to be cleaned up some. The only way it will get done for the time being is for the moderators to enforce it by moving items to their proper forums...

I agree.

Does the pinger ping you every time you make a post like the 'new post to you' comes up?

No, it doesn't, so I usually ignore the "new posts to you" and just pay attention to the pager.

To be perfectly blunt, if I were trying to think of the perfect way to disrupt a website from its objective, it wouldn't be to come in and post things that would get me banned. It wouldn't be to come in and talk off the wall. It would be to come in and just gently steer the site to irrelevance. I am NOT saying I think that many of you are doing this on purpose, but I am saying that lately that has been the end result.

The same can be said for the "moderate" influence that taints some threads and supports the further infecting of our govt from top to bottom. Heck , I saw a title labelled with (Misleading Title) as part of its title. I guess we don't need to read things for ourselves anymore, just let someone else do your thinking for you. You can't get much more user friendly that that, huh? ;-)

When we are told to quit having fun, I'm out of here. Seriesly. ;-\
