So, What Sort of Free Republic Should This Be?

I used to use the FreeperBeeper all the time. One day I was driving to the grocery store, and I thought I heard the FreeperBeeper sound. What frightened me is that it took me a about a minute to realize that I shouldn't be hearing the FreeperBeeper in my car.

I knew then I needed to turn the beeper off and take a vacation.

Yesterday, a couple of Michigan v Ohio State Football Game Threads got blocked or relegated to "Chat." In the future does that mean that all sports threads posted on the main board will meet the same fate? If so, I agree with the policy. If not, you are being arbitrary.

Proceed with the moderator bashing on this thread as is customary for these threads.

OK.

You remind me of Ash and Eschoir combined, with a touch of DITHF to top it off.

Newbie.

How was that?

I said: "....on JohnHuang2 and Kattracks...."

You were critical of things I DIDN'T SAY:"....You're advocating limiting the hours within which people who may not live in EST or keep the same hours you do can post news?.....

Let me repeat for those who can't read...........

I said: "....JohnHuang2 and Kattracks...."

As for my comments on 'hours': This would give ALL FReepers across ALL timezones a chance to get onboard and read their morning papers NOT just those who are ahead of everybody else in the east.

Sorry if I gored anybody's sacred cow.

Please see my tag line.

I figure my page down button works quite well.

I'm honored people think of me enough to include me. If I'm interested, I pause and read. If I'm not, page down works fine. No need to fuss at anyone.

Well said.

However, one person's tabloid is another person's life and death crusade or conspiracy theory.

There'd be no end of the affronted chips-on-shoulders!

Historically, this approach (asking via this sort of thread) only works for a while, without addressing the underlying dynamic that brings about the symptom.

IMHO, and based on some earlier responses, those dynamics include:

1) Trouble navigating to find such "non-core" threads
2) People like such threads (for fun, diversion, "breaks in the action", cameraderie, esprit de corps, etc).
-----They're one of the things I love about this place
3) Posters wanting to get attention to their thread (in rare cases, it's ego, but I think mostly it's because the poster truly thinks it's either interesting or deserves to be brought up).
-----The wide fields of expertise on FR is another one of the things I love about this place.
4) People need help (from the mundane, such as PC help, to the divine, such as prayer requests).
-----(FReepers helping each other is yet another thing I love about this place)

Is upholding the constitution one of the things I love about this place? - You Bet. But there's so much more.

Perhaps a bit of navigational redesign, while costing more than this approach, may be necessary. Otherwise, I would only expect you'd have to do this again, sooner or later.

What a pity.

Some would say ringless is close to clueless but I'm not so sure.

I think there's no accounting for taste.

But what a rich buffet to choose from.

And I don't mind moderator rank having it's privileges.

The problem is, you can have 100 posts to you from other forums, general interest, religion, backroom....whatever, and never realize it. If you don't routinely browse the other forums and you don't get pinged, for a fair amount of the time, they might as well not exist.

I haven't read the rest of the replies but I think the pings work across forums... In other words it doesn't matter which forum you are in if you get a ping from any forum it will show up to you when you refresh the latest post page. If you click on it it will take you to the new post/reply no matter which forum it's in.... or that's my understanding

That's the way it works for me.

Perhaps you have to be subscribed to the other forums for it work, as others have complained of the same.

FreeRepublic is so much better this morning.

Professional disrupters break up our ability to form a community by posting large numbers of articles and by posting bonding type articles in the middle of the night. My guess is that they also contribute heavily. If they acted like Ash, they would unite us. They act like one of us, but the effect they produce is destruction.

Remember when a first post was a thing of pride? Contrast that with broad search-dumps that posters couldn't even have the time to read themselves.

Maybe it's time to come up with a FreeRepublic statement of ethics: a post is a gem you want to share with others.

"I'd like one big page where I can see what's moving on all the forums."

Same here.

Well it's not one big page but you can open each forum you are interested in in a different window and click between windows every so often scrolling the latest post pages in each forum to see what's moving on the different forums.....

Not perfect but offers an option to nothing at all.
