I hasten to add that "human impacts" are an unfortunate sight, and probably the author(s) meant to state "the effects by humans" and "how humans affected."

America once had native horses, camels, mammoths, and other large animals that were extinct before Europeans arrived.
I wonder who ate them all.

"Prior to the arrival of Columbus in the Americas around 1500, the estimates of Native American population in North America ranged from 2 million to 3.8 million people."2 million to 3.5 million on the whole continent? Next time I hear a Manifest Destiny basher decry the arrival of Europeans in North America, I will be interested to hear him explain the moral justification of 3.5 million people laying exclusive claim to the entire continent.

The US (including Alaska) is approximately 3.5 million square miles in area. That translates into approximately 2.2 billion acres.
That means the pre-columbian population density -- assuming that all 3.8 aboriginal inhabitants lived within the current US boundaries (which is obviously not the case) -- was one person per every 589 acres!!
I thought liberals were supposed to be against suburban sprawl.

I believe horses were first introduced by the Spanish. Nope. Horses were re-introduced by the Spanish. They had been here before, but had become extinct.
