What a ludicrous statement. Green onions by themselves are not a health hazzard. I'll bet my whole stack of match sticks that the green onions were fertilized with human waste, probably in Mexico, and then not cleaned appropriately at Chi-Chi's.

I agree with you.....onions need a good cleaning....they're like trying to clean your teeth....you almost need dental floss in between the dark green parts.....sooooo....clean your onions good folks, and BUY AMERICAN green onions.

As a former orchardists wife, I laugh at people who think all the cheap produce is great....it comes with a price....like all those sprays we can't use here in the USA....well they use them elsewhere, and all the rules we have here for our growers....they do NOT have most of those rules elsewhere. People need to buy a clue....plus cooking your own food CAN (depending upon your hygenic teachings) mean LESS health problems.

I love green onions and will wash them more throughly, maybe i should always cook them.

If the onions are contaminated by Hepatitis virus, the usual methods of washing fresh vegetables that are meant to be served without thorough cooking would not remove the virus. The only sure way to prevent illness of this type is to NEVER eat raw fruits or vegetables from a 3rd world country.

I live near a town that has been inundated with Mexican immigrants. Every Christmas, many of them make the trek to Mexico to see their relatives. And every year, following Christmas vacation, there is an outbreak of hepatitis in the local schools. No one speaks of this because to do so is racist and insensitive. The school nurse is even on the hush-hush. She makes it sound like a child turning yellow and being severely ill is just your routine childhood illness. Of course, this particular school has the largest white flight of open enrollment OUT of the district than any other school in the state.
