Because I remember that he countered the Soviet threat and inspired the world's peoples with respect for America and American ideals and hope for the future. Not everyone everywhere (that's never possible) but in overwhelming numbers.

Partly because he was a highly experienced military commander during WWII. But only partly. In many places they weren't timid at all; Cuba and VietNam and Berlin for example. Hungary. The weren't afraid to shoot down the U-2 and make an issue of it. And so on.
