Seven wounded in bomb blast in Indian mosque

BOMBAY, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Men riding a motorcycle threw a bomb into a mosque in western India on Friday, wounding at least seven people, police said.

The attack took place in Parbhani town, nearly 500 km (310 miles) east of India's financial hub of Bombay, and came during prayers on the last Friday before the feast of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

"The explosion took place when some people riding a motorcycle threw the bomb into the mosque," Parbhani police officer A.D. Kurundar told Reuters by phone.

He said seven men were injured in the attack, contradicting a spokesman in the state government in Bombay who said some 20 people had been injured.

The bomb attack came nearly three months after Bombay was rocked by twin car bombings which killed 52 people and wounded over 150.

Police had blamed those attacks on an outlawed radical Indian Muslim students' group, working alongside a Pakistan-based Kashmiri rebel group.

BOMBAY, India (AP) - A bomb exploded in a mosque in the western Indian state of Maharashtra during Friday prayers, injuring at least seven people, local police said.

The explosion occurred inside a mosque in Parbhani, a small town 345 miles east of Bombay, India's financial center and capital of Maharashtra state.

``The explosion occurred immediately after three men on motorcycles threw what looked like a packet into the mosque,'' said Alok Joshi, a police inspector in Parbhani. ``It was a small explosion.''

BOMBAY, Nov 21 (Reuters) - A bomb attack on a mosque in western India injured 21 people on Friday, triggering sporadic violence as angry crowds set fire to shops and vehicles, police said.

Police in the town of Parbhani, nearly 500 km (310 miles) east of India's financial capital Bombay, had earlier said seven people had been injured. They said a curfew had been imposed to try to curb the violence.

"The situation is tense and mobs are setting fire to shops and vehicles and throwing stones in the main market area," Parbhani police official S.S. Khandare told Reuters by telephone.

Could AQ or other muslim operatives blow up a small portion of an Indian mosque to make it look like Islam is under attack. After bomb then Saudi's take terrorists back into their good graces and moslem world is up in arms. Never put it past terrorists to do this for the "greater good" of allah

The motorcycles modus operandi is reminiscent of the jihadi attack on the American Library in Calcutta in Dec 2001 and also of recent attacks in Afghanistan; motorcycle attacks have been featured in many AQ videos.
