Hillary arms herself with a military pal

WASHINGTON - If Sen. Hillary Clinton is trying to cozy up to the military, she was right on target yesterday with the Army's top general.

New York's junior Democrat laid into a Pentagon cost-cutting study that suggests closing dozens of schools and commissaries on bases - and won the support of Gen. Peter Schoomaker, the new Army chief of staff.

"For the life of me, I do not understand this," Clinton said of the study on the viability of schools and the low-cost shops (PXs) for military families.

"This sends the wrong message" in a time of war, and could hurt recruitments and reenlistments by "undermining the quality of life of our soldiers and their families," Clinton said at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

To Clinton's delight, Schoomaker, the former commander of the supersecret Delta Force, was in full agreement.

"It's a great point," Schoomaker told Clinton. "The issue you raise here is central to having the kind of Army we want to have," he said.

"It's absolutely important for this nation" to boost morale with improved benefits for soldiers, Schoomaker said.

Clinton has made military pay, benefits and family support the central focus of her surprise posting this year to the Armed Services Committee, which Republicans charged she would use to garner national security credentials for an eventual White House run.

"In fairness to her, she has shown some interest in military matters," said Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.). "But the political reality is that if she wants to eventually run for President, she has to build up her national defense credentials."

Acting Army Secretary Les Brownlee said he will argue to keep the schools and shops open.

Clinton called the Pentagon study a trial balloon and said, "We're hoping it falls with a great thump."

Sen. John Warner (R-Va.), the committee's chairman, told Clinton, "You might have punctured it a little bit."

Benefits in lieu of pay. Increasing the pay of the real fighters and their real support would make dramatic reductions in permanent personnel and facilities more practical.

Frankly, I think Hillary could care less about our military, their comforts, or their ability to vote. She's posturing for a presidential run.

Actually glad someone is trying to put a stake into this stupid plan to kill PX's, commissaries and schools.

Stateside PXs aren't low cost (Wal-Mart is usually cheaper)- but about 20% of the take goes back into the community vice profits. So, if you kill the PX system either quality of life for military families declines or tax payers pick up the tab.

Commissaries are a different story - IMHO should be merged into the PX/AAFES system, with only subsidies for overseas locations.

Closing base schools would force tens of thousands of kids to ride buses for journies everyday - another decrement to quality of life.

Off-post retailers have been trying to kill PXs and Commissaries for years to increase their market share; they couldn't care less about those in uniform.

Too bad a Republican couldn't have taken a lead in this and too bad this administration that has put many in harms way even allowed this to come to the table.

Oh so now all of a sudden she cares about military families. All I can say is under Pres. Bush, pay has increased big time. Under the witch's philandering while deciding to go to war hubby, I know my husband was lucky if he got 50 bucks a month in a raise. It has risen 500 bucks a month in past 2 years under Bush because he pushed increased pay. Her concern is so fake and it's digusting. JMO. Her concern is only for her political gain.

She may be right on this one.........I happen to agree with her.............but supporting PX's and other military family services will hardly qualify her as an expert in defense matters. Damned shame the general public won't understand the distinction when the media tout her membership on the Armed Services Committee when she runs for President.................and she will.
