Terrorists jailed over football international plot

Four Islamic militants have been jailed for planning a terrorist attack at a packed Paris stadium in Paris during an international football match.

Police arrested the men the day before the 2001 match at the Stade de France between France and Algeria in raids of their apartments in working-class suburbs.

They moved in after intelligence agents bugged a phone call between one of the suspects and a member of an extremist Algerian movement.

In the raid, police found bomb-making materials, pistols, bullets, a bullet-proof vest and a tract written by Osama bin Laden.

A Paris court has jailed the men - three of them Algerians - for terms ranging from 30 months to six years

All four defendants were university educated.

Story filed: 14:51 Wednesday 19th November 2003

So what happens to them when their jail terms are up? Back on the streets to plan more terror attacks? Deportation to USA?

If they were arrested in 2001, what's the point of the story today? Are they being released or what?

Hmm, football... the goals are open. Sounds similar to that AQ threat that's been on FR the past few weeks.

Exactly my question.

Do you have a link to the thread with that specific threat? I don't recall reading that here, but then again, I am not here 24/7. It is strange that this poster registered yesterday and posts a story about a 2001 arrest prior to a football game, it could mean something (or not).

To add to that, every time I tried to reply in the last few minutes, I kept getting the "This Page Cannot Be Displayed" error, had to log off my internet connection and log back on to get back to the thread. Was FR having a problem or was it just my ISP? < /tin foil hat>

At least it would add some excitement to a soccer game.
