I honestly don't think I'd accept a buy off from someone if I truly believed they did that to my child.

If it was the only justice you were likely to get that wouldn't subject your child to getting on the witness stand to recount everything, you might. I think I would, if the ordeal promised to drag on for many expensive years. A lawsuit consumes you--body, soul, and pocketbook. Settling is one way to make the pain stop and get on with it, and that was probably true for both plaintiff and defendent.

Imagine having your child on the witness stand being badgered by the defense attorney, who is trying to discredit his allegations, his sanity, his ethics, and his own sexual history. He might even have made it look like it was all the kid's fault for seducing the accused.
