It's Certainly A Thrill: 'Sgt. Pepper' Is Best Album
(Better than the White Album?!)

To everyone's complete lack of surprise, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band has been anointed the best album ever in a new Rolling Stone poll.
The Beatles' consecrated 1967 classic tops ''The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time,'' a collector's issue on stands Friday. Though typically the odds-on favorite for such rankings, Sgt. Pepper wasn't a slam-dunk.
''There was a horse race,'' says Rolling Stone music editor Joe Levy. ''Early on, any number of albums in the top 10 were in the lead. The final result is no shock, but there's a reason for that. The Beatles, after all, were the most important and innovative rock group in the world. And Sgt. Pepper arguably set the tone for what an album could be.''
The Beatles have four albums in the top 10. Predictably, the list is weighted toward testosterone-fueled vintage rock. The top solo female is Joni Mitchell, whose 1971 Blue is No. 30.
The newest entry is this year's Elephant by the White Stripes, landing at No. 390. The most current disc in the top 20 is Nirvana's 1991 breakthrough, Nevermind. Recent albums by Coldplay and The Strokes also made the cut, as did all three Eminem releases and a wide range of hip-hop.
''A classic record proves itself over time,'' Levy says, ''so it's gratifying and surprising to see so many newer records on the list, considering they're competing against such beloved and titanic records as Rubber Soul and Dusty in Memphis.''
Rolling Stone asked musicians, critics, historians and key industry figures to rank their 50 favorites. The 273 participants included Beck, U2's The Edge, Jackson Browne, Art Garfunkel, Missy Elliott and members of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Linkin Park and The Doors. The Ernst & Young accounting firm devised a point system to weight votes for 1,600 submitted titles.
Voters were invited to identify favorites from any period or genre, allowing a smattering of country (Johnny Cash), jazz (Miles Davis) and seminal blues (Howlin' Wolf). The list also accommodates greatest hits collections and live recordings; four James Brown picks include two sets of hits and Live at the Apollo (1963). Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams, The Drifters and Loretta Lynn, who flourished during the era of 45s, are represented only by hits compilations.
''Artists whose best works were singles are not going to be well represented,'' Levy notes. For example, he adds, ''Disco is under-represented because it's a singles-driven genre.''

The Reagan sound bites on Gods of War is great, I just rediscovered Def Leppard and never realized how good they are until now.

Ya know, people make fun of Leonard Nimoy's recording career. OK, so he wasn't the greatest singer in the world but he has recorded more albums than the Beatles. I get tired of him being put down. Sure it's easy to scoff but he worked hard at recording these works. In recent years he has actually made some very good albums, distanced from the "pop variety" he made in the 60's & 70's. As you read through the reviews you might notice some of the DOT Reviews are less-than-kind. Well, let's face it, the albums were pretty bad. I saved William Blakney's original reviews and have only added to them, so the tone can be a little harsh.
As I've said to many who have written to critisize the reviews, Hey if we can't make fun of our heroes who can we make fun of?
Enjoy the site.

I have the White Album CD on my Christmas List. "Fixing A Hole" is one of my favorite songs. Don't know why; it's sort of plaintive, but I just love it. That one, and "Eleanor Rigby" are my favorites.

The funny thing about Sgt Pepper is that it is the Beatles response the Beach Boys album that carried "Good Vibrations" Paul is said to have heard the Brian Wilson effort, been stunned by it and wondered "How are we ever gonna top this". That's interesting, because I remember seeing an interview with Brian Wilson talking about listening to a Phil Spector produced "wall of sound" song on the radio one day and having to pull over because he was so blown away by the sound of it. It was after that that the Beach Boys did "Pet Sounds", using some of that 'wall of sound' technique.

My favorite song of theirs is a tossup between Echoes, Dogs and Pigs (Three Different Ones). I once told a roomate that Pigs was almost like they put a spigot in my brain and let he music come out, and that's what was in there.
He gave me a funny look and said, "Really..............?"

You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when youre on the street
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye, and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
Youll get the chance to put the knife in.
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know its going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you get older
And in the end youll pack, fly down south
Hide your head in the sand
Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer.
And when you loose control, youll reap the harvest that youve sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And its too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down alone
Dragged down by the stone.
I gotta admit that Im a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if Im just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake of this creeping malaise
If I dont stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?
Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyones expendable and no-one had a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And you believe at heart, everyones a killer.
Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a seat in the stand
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone.

Fans of the Rock - Hear me now and believe me later. A year from now eveyone will know about this new British band - The Darkness, album - Permission to Land. If you like AC DC, Queen, Rush, etc buy this CD. There's not a bad song on it. Some say this band is the savior of rock! Some say it's the best album in the last 20 years!

I bet you the Bee Gees, aren`t even mentioned in this list. To me they are the most under-rated band I ever knew and the backlash against them for the disco thing the most unfair. First off, not even talking about all the other hits they wrote for other artists, songs that most people would be quite suprised about, the disco backlash was just another example of what happens when morons rule the day, like when Demon-crats get into power. I mean let`s put it in a nutshell; Protests broke out at the end of the `70`s early 80`s against disco. They had "No Bee Gees day" on radio stations and record burnings, and the famous record burning at that baseball park. And what did they replace it with? MTV which played disco, but badly. So we replaced disco with worse disco. Yeah ok. All I know is if a band today came even close to writing one song that was of the quality of those Bee Gee ones, they`d win every freggin` award known to man, and they`d stretch it out into a 15 year career, yet even to this day, the most recent albums from the Bee Gees are still all but banned from the radio even when Maurice died. And let`s not even go into the rap albums that sample the Bee Gees on a regular basis.

Yes, their double LP is probably their most disjointed, but in a sense it also shows where they were at that time, with Ringo and George having quit temporarily during the recording process, John off with Yoko in their own little world, and Paul fluctuating between hard rock and doltish dottering ditties.
The original version of Let it Be (IMHO) is an underrated follow-up, when you consider it was begun six weeks after the release of The Beatles and the group came together to play it (mostly) live in the studio and shout it from the rooftop, literally. The chatter in between songs is a nice complement to the chaos of its predecessor and the songs fit together better than those of the double album. I can't wait to get my clutches on the new version that came out yesterday, although I would have preferred it if they left on "Maggie May" and "Dig It."
